Inspired by Petite Silver Vixen: My New Beret
‘Tis the season in the North Country when hats are a necessity as temperatures have a tendency to drop below freezing quite frequently. Also, living so near a Great Lake, winds can often become a problem. So if I don’t want a mouthful of my own hair every time I step outside, hats are sort of a prerequisite to keep my tresses from blowing around in a blinding and choking manner! But there is no need to sacrifice style when choosing a hat. You already know my current obsession with those 20’s inspired cloche hats. But I have recently been inspired by the fabulous style of Jacqueline of Petite Silver Vixen and her amazing array of berets. Check out her post 15 Reasons to Wear a Beret! and you will see exactly what I am talking about. Then hop around Jacqueline’s blog a bit for some more inspiration on styling berets with any outfit!
*This is not a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
*Beret: TJMaxx. Shop TJMaxx hat selection here.
I recently purchased my very first beret and I chose basic black to test my beret-wearing ability. I first styled it on the blog in my Thanksgiving Day post, but I have worn it quite frequently in the past few weeks since its acquisition.
*Sweater: Kohl’s (From a few years ago).
*Jeans: American Eagle (From last year).
This outfit is just one way that I styled my new black beret. I was feeling that Parisian vibe that berets often connote with my black argyle turtleneck sweater. The weather was damp and bitter cold and begging for a comfortable and cozy look the day I wore this outfit. Distressed boyfriend jeans, a chunky knit scarf, and warm socks paired with open toed booties seemed to fit the bill nicely. Add in a menswear inspired tweed overcoat and I was ready to brave the outdoors.
*Coat: Talbots (From 15 years ago).
*Booties: Charlotte Russe (Similar here and here).
And now that I have ventured into the world of berets, I need to add more colors to begin a proper collection. I just ordered this dusty rose wool beret from Banggood and I am so excited for its arrival. But it will take me a long time, I’m sure, to build a beret collection as fabulous as Jacqueline’s!
Do you wear hats? What is your preferred style of headwear? I would love to hear about it in the comments!
Keeping it on the edge,

Hats of any kind are totally fun, and I’m so glad I’ve been experimenting with them. But do you know I don’t really have a beret?? That’s crazy, and I need to remedy that now!!
Love the entire outfit, Shelbee!!

Jacqueline, thank YOU for inspiring me! And I love that you used the phrase “tickled pink” since my next beret is a pinkish colored one! On the way to me now. I can’t wait to style it. And thank you for such a lovely comment…but no one rocks the beret quite like you, my friend!

Oh, berets, they make me feel really sophisticated for some reason 🙂 You look good, Shelbee with this look! And this is the best way to wear an androgynous style, with great feminine boots!
I am wearing hats always. Lately, with the cold that we are having here in north Spain, I am wearing knit beanies (with animal ears, I just think they are very playful!).
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Helen, thanks so much! I bet you look adorable in your animal ear beanies! And hats are the perfect way to keep warm and add a little extra something to an outfit! I have a few animal ear hats myself that have appeared on my blog somewhere (or maybe on my Instagram). There is a post I wrote last winter about My Foxy Snood which was made for me by a friend and it is super cute! Thanks for commenting and I hope you are having a wonderful week.

What a cute outfit, Shelbee! I really love Beret and those booties. I would have never thought to wear socks with them, but it’s a neat trick to winterize your summer outfits.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Gigi! I am really into the cozy socks with open toed shoes or booties trend right now. Or socks with pumps. I just think is so adorable!

Hmmm. I have never given much thought to the beret. But I really am not much of a hat person. Mainly just sun hats at the beach and a beanie if it is super cold in winter. I like the array that Jacqueline has, and could almost be persuaded with the leopard print one!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Alicia, thanks so much for stopping by! I have only recently begun wearing hats consistently. When my hair was shorter, they just looked awful on me. But now that my hair has grown out, I am hooked on hats. I am really digging Jacqueline’s leopard beret, too, and may have to add one to my wish list! Stay tuned if you are interested in more ways to style hats…because I have a bunch more to share! Have a fabulous day!

The beret really suits you! I love that Jacqueline inspired you to try this style of hat! I usually wear baker boy caps or hats with a wide brim but I bought a vintage mustard-coloured beret on eBay (on a total whim) back in the summer so I’m really pleased they are on trend right now. I shall also follow Jacqueline’s advice and buy another…any excuse 😉 Thanks for linking up Shelbee!

Emma, thanks so much! I also love the baker boy style hats, but they don’t love me in return! They just don’t work with the shape of my face and head. I keep trying them on hoping for a different result! Haha. Oh well, I will admire them on others and stick with my berets and cloche hats. And a vintage beret in mustard sounds marvelous!
