Inspired by Lipgloss and Lace: Top Priority
It is never a bad idea to step outside of your comfort zone every once in a while. For as long as I can remember, my personal style choices have never been quite mainstream. I have always been and probably will always be on the fringes of what is popular and acceptable. While it can sometimes leave me feeling lonely and a bit like an outcast, it also has made me recognize and appreciate that the differences amongst all of us are what give us glimpses of undeniable beauty in a sometimes very ugly world.
While I spend my time dancing around the fringes of what is popular and trendy, every now and again I see an outfit that is a bit out of my own comfort zone and it completely appeals to me. For example, my jogger outfit that was inspired by Nina of Sharing a Journey was a bit more conservative than where I feel comfortably styled. The funny thing is that when I go a bit more conservative, the feedback is exponentially more positive. Not that I get very much negative feedback on my eccentric styles, but I suppose it just made me realize that what I usually wear is not what most women wear and therefore they may not be so inspired by my outfits.
Then I saw Shauna of Lipgloss and Lace style this super cute red flowy top with denim shorts in her post Top Priority. It immediately brought to mind a red flowy top that I had found at my local consignment shop last summer. When I spotted the top, I wasn’t certain if it suited my personal style. But it did have a bit of a boho vibe and I loved the print so for the super low price I figured I should grab it up and figure it out from there. Then it sat in my closet unworn for over a year. Until I saw Shauna’s outfit and then I had the perfect reason for finally wearing this top.
I am not sure this outfit would classify as conservative, but it is certainly more conservative than what I usually wear. And I think it is even a bit more conservative than what Shauna usually wears as well. But it really is the perfect summer outfit combination! And in real life, I got so many more compliments on this top than I have on most any other thing that I have worn recently. But maybe that’s because I had a few visitors the day I wore this outfit and I rarely see any people in real life these days to notice what I am wearing.
Enough about the outfit though. Let me talk a bit about Shauna. Hailing from Orange County, California, where she lives with her husband and her fur baby, Shauna has been blogging about fashion and travel for the past 6 years. Her style is vibrant and fun and glamorous as she lives by the mantra that confidence is our best accessory. Shauna steps outside the box when it comes to personal style as she creates whimsical, bold, and swoon-worthy outfits that any woman could pull off if she wears her confidence and her smile as her most prominent accessories!
Shauna also has such a kind and caring heart as she always adds a little positive message to her fashion posts that will inspire you, boost your mood, or simply give you a much needed smile. She is also so generous and kind in her comments within the blogging community. I have yet to read one of Shauna’s posts that doesn’t leave me feeling just a bit brighter with a bigger smile on my face.
If you do not already know Shauna, you can find her on Instagram or visit her blog, Lipgloss and Lace, for all sorts of brilliant inspiration!
Who is inspiring you lately?

This outfit looks fabulous on both of you! I have one section of Feedly (like Bloglovin’) called Priority reads. It is for a very small group of bloggers with whom I always interact. You and Shauna are both in this category. It made me happy to see your style steal from another of my favorite bloggers.
“I have always been and probably will always be on the fringes of what is popular and acceptable.” Story of my whole freakin life. (No doubt why I see a kindred spirit in you.) But I like me, so I’m okay with it. 😄

Michelle, thanks so much! Gosh, this comment just made me smile so big! Kindred spirits, for sure! I like myself, too, (well, most of the time), and I have gotten used to living on the fringes. So I am okay with it, too!

I love this look in you! In this world of social media, it’s easy to lose our true style self. Some of my most “liked” posts are outfits that weren’t my personal favorites- isn’t that funny?
I “feel” what I wear, so I’m always digging in to discover my true personal style – and it may not be what gets the top reviews, isn’t that funny?
For example, I never feel like myself in stripe anything, yet many women LOVE stripes and when I’ve posted outfits with stripes, the comments flow in, as I’m saying to myself, I’ll probably never wear that outfit again 😂 so there’s my 2 cents.
I love these posts you are doing, super fun. And isn’t that what fashion is all about?

Suzanne, thanks so much for this wonderfully insightful comment! Yes, this is what fashion is all about…changing, trying new things, moving forward, adapting. I always think of myself more like a style chameleon because I also get dressed on how I am feeling. I dramatically switch my style genres day by day…like a little girl playing dress up. And I love it that way!

Very cute! I love those shoes too (not that I’d ever wear them as I am not coordinated enough-LOL!). I think we all need to step out of our comfort zones now and then.

Joanne, thanks so much! Actually wedges aren’t that terrible for walking in! I hope you are having a great week.

Aw, Bettye, thank you so much! I guess it is not completely out of my fashion zone and I did feel great wearing this outfit, so I suppose it is more “me” than I gave credit for! I get super excited, too, when I spot an outfit that I can recreate! I try to do it at least once a week, it keeps my daily styling routine interesting. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Bo, thank you so much for this wonderful comment! Wow. I am so flattered by this. I also appreciate the different styles I see on other bloggers and am constantly drawing inspiration from you all and just adding my own personal twists. That is what keeps this whole fashion business fun after all!

Red and paisley…come to mama! I love paisley print and even have a Pinterest board dedicated to all things paisley. You wear that bright color so well.
And let’s talk about that hat. It looks comfy and broken-in, not stiff like some straw hats. I like the feminine detailing, almost scalloped brim and the weave almost looks like lace. Very timid over here about wearing hats but need to get over it. Maybe I just haven’t found the right one…til now!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Leslie! I have a Pinterest board dedicated to all things paisley as well! Great minds, my friend. This hat was a great buy. It has a wire through the brim so you can adjust it the way you want it and it stays. And it is great for travel because you can flatten it to pack without ruining it. I love hats and wear them often! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
