Inspired by Fashion Fairy Dust: Faux Fur Vest & Moto Jacket

This is not a sponsored post.

My friend Debbie of Fashion Fairy Dust has inspired me once again with her amazing styling tricks and layering ideas. Actually, this is the third post where I am sharing an outfit inspired by Debbie. You can see the other two here and here. And as always, it is not only her sartorial choices that get me excited and motivated, but her wonderful words of wisdom. The post that inspired this outfit was part of the Ageless Style series which is a collaboration among 10 bloggers who all style one theme to showcase a variety of looks and prove that we can all wear whatever the hell we like at any age. Debbie’s post, Faux Fur Vest & Moto Jacket: 4 Tips for Choosing/Using a Word of the Year, inspired both my outfit combination as well as helped to motivate me toward having the best year ever in 2019.

Debbie of Fashion Fairy Dust

You have probably seen lots of blog posts floating around this month stating individual goals and resolutions for the new year. But one of the new things that seems to have become a preference for many is choosing a word of the year to help guide you through the next 12 months and focus on what you would like to achieve by the time we reach 2020. Debbie has chosen the words intentional and discover as her words for 2019 and she has also provided some helpful tips for choosing the best word for yourself. So do hope over and give her post a read.

Vest: Old from Cato Fashions
Jacket: Solitary Consignment
Pants: Torrid

For me, I went with two phrases to help me focus in the new year. Single words just didn’t carry the impact or meaning that I needed for this go round. 2019 will be The Year of Letting Go as well as the year where I will think smaller in order to go bigger. But I have already dedicated two posts to those topics. So let’s just talked about this styling inspiration, shall we?

Turtleneck: Old from Target
Necklace: Old from Walmart
Boots: Jacinta Booties from JustFab

I was completely fascinated by Debbie’s layering of her faux fur vest over her moto jacket. I do love all of my furry pieces in the winter, but honestly it has been just too damn cold around here to wear the typical pieces that I would layer with a furry vest. Normally, my furry vest layering tricks include a long sleeve tee shirt or a thin dress under the fur. But at 30 degrees below zero, that is just not warm enough. Even indoors. Everything seems drafty around here lately.

So when I saw Debbie layering her cute faux fur vest over her jacket, I definitely let an audible gasp slip from my mouth and all sorts of ideas were triggered. Then I remembered that I had layered a faux fur vest over a heavy cardigan last winter but I was completely unsure of it at the time. Well, now I am totally on board. A girl has to find a way to stay warm and stylish at the same time. And this can be challenging when you live an arctic tundra.

So I followed Debbie’s lead and reached for my newest moto jacket addition (purchased from the consignment shop), my favorite furry vest (the very first one I ever purchased) and layered it all over a completely black outfit to let my new gold brocade boots be the showcase. The best part about finding outfit inspiration from someone else is that you don’t need to nor should you copy their outfit exactly. You hone in on the thing that really caught your attention in the first place and then make it your own.

I have pieces similar to all of Debbie’s right down to her fabulous over the knee boots and could have created an exact replica of her outfit. And while that would be super fun to see a side by side of the same outfit worn by two different women with completely different body types, it is just as fun and gives you more styling ideas when you take the inspiration and create something a little bit different.

I hope you all enjoyed this “Inspired By” post and found some inspiration for yourselves here as well. I really would love to do these posts every Thursday. Now if only the weather would cooperate so I can venture outdoors and take some photos without risking my fingers and toes to possible frostbite!

Who and what have been inspiring you lately? And have you decided on your focus/goals/word of the year for 2019?

Keeping it on the edge,

Shelbee

Hey friend~thank you so much for the big boatload of love you sent my way! You are one of my most favorite blog friends and I’m glad that you love me right back! You nailed your “inspired by” look. Those brocade boots are so so cool and I love the all black base. And you’re so right, when it’s this cold we’ve gotta find a way to keep warm and toasty while still looking cute! xo

Yes, Debbie has great Bohemian style. I like how you made her inspiration your own. It’s so you. Not a copy cat thing. You successfully adopted an idea and interpreted it so you! Genius!

Love this post! You look fabulous, as usual. I love the brocade boots, and your zipper-y pants. I just purchased my second furry vest, since I wore my first one so often it’s practically developed its own personality. My first was a black one, which goes with every single thing. My second is a leopard print, and even though it’s fake fur, is so dense, that nothing penetrates it. I wear it with my long black sweater underneath, and it looks great, and keeps me so toasty! I wear it with jeans and boots and it also looks great. One of the things I love to layer under my furry vests is a denim jacket, which gives me lots of pockets for keys, cards, phone, etc. I’ve also layered the leopard vest over a leopard print sweater, and fancied myself quite the print mixer, heh. The leopard looks good layered over a brown or tan sweater as well, but I prefer it with black. When you get to work by 6AM, it’s easy to just grab black and not think about it. But when I am dressing to go to lunch, I do it up with my fabulous burgundy booties, and some other burgundy article (idea stolen from you, you styling genius), and I feel awesome and warm. I have found myself performing the John Travolta strut from the opening scene of Saturday Night fever, while wearing that outfit! And I am not even tall, or from Brooklyn! Thanks for the ysyling tips Shelbee! Rock on!

Susan, I love all of your styling options for your furry leopard vest. Leopard and burgundy is so good together, isn’t it? And now I want a leopard vest! And over a denim jacket sounds wickedly awesome! I just ordered a blue furry vest to wear next year for Penn State games! I added the white furry one this year, but I figured a blue was kind of necessary. But I am sure I will style this winter long before college football season returns. I can totally see you strutting like JT in SNF! Rock it, my friend!

My next purchase is going to be a white furry vest and a pair of white or black yeti boots. I don’t care a fig if I look like a yeti, I will be warm and toasty! I wonder if you can do the JT strut in yeti boots? Stay tuned for results.
