Inspired by Ephemera: Yellow Velvet Skirt and Bomber Jacket
I feel like maybe I am finally getting a bit of my mojo back…at least my sartorial mojo. But I’ll take whatever I can get these days. When it comes to finding outfit inspiration, there is definitely no shortage of fabulously stylish women in the world of blogging and other social media platforms who deliver us the most delicious confections and savory combinations to keep these long winter days of isolation a little more fashionable and interesting.
As most of us have been spending our days in our most comfortable loungewear, I’m not sure if that is the image that we really want to put forth into the world. I used to think it was silly to get dressed up with no where to go, but now getting dressed with no where to go is our way of life. It’s either that or stay in our frumpy clothes for comfort until the end of time.
And I don’t really want to be frumpy and comfy and cozy for every minute of every day for the rest of time. I want to live a little! But apparently that plan has moved itself indoors and away from other humans for an indefinite period of time. So I guess if I am going to live a little, I am going to do it alone in my house with my husband and kids. And that means dressing for the occasion!
Don’t get me wrong, I do love a good warm, cozy, stay at home lounging outfit. And I have no intention of sitting around my house wearing 4 inch heels and tights all day long when I literally don’t even step outside. But I do like that feeling you get when you slip your feet into a fabulous pair of too high shoes that are difficult to walk in. And the outfits that are sassy and accessorized to the nines in exchange for the comfortability factor. When looking good and feeling good have nothing at all to do with the comfort of your clothing. I will always be that girl who sacrifices comfort for style given the right circumstances!
A few months ago, I was reading a blog post by Sheila of Ephemera where she shared her Bigass Birthday Weekend Wrap-Up featuring a yellow pleated velvet skirt with an olive green top and silky bomber jacket. When I first saw Sheila’s birthday style, I was taken in by the rich autumnal shades of mustard yellow and olive green with black and gold. Then I realized that I have the same exact skirt in my closet and a very similar bomber jacket. So I ran with the inspiration and created a similar look with things that I had in my closet.
I am not all that familiar with Sheila although I have known of her blog for as long as I have been blogging. What I do know is that she hails from Victoria, British Columbia, in Canada and is a fabulously creative woman over 50 who loves fashion, art, books, cat pictures, and other quirky things. I absolutely adore her unique and whimsical style and often find myself wanting everything from her closet! She definitely has one of the most magnificent shoe collections that I have ever seen as well as an eyewear wardrobe that makes me swoon. Plus her beautiful smile and positive attitude are very infectious and God knows, we can all use that kind of infection these days!
Since I did not know very much about Sheila before I sat down to write this post, I had to do some digging. And I found some wonderful posts that she has written over the years with details about herself. After reading through 10 Honest Things About Me and Seven Things About Me, I now understand why I have been drawn toward Sheila and her style from the first blog post I saw.
Literally, we have so much in common from taking nude photographs in an effort to build our own body confidence to a shared love for language and words and poetry. I can also relate to starting out shy and blossoming into an outgoing woman who expresses herself boldly through personal style. To quote Sheila, she is “a total geek, nerd, dork, what-have-you” and you know those are my favorite people in the whole world because they are my people!
I apologize for the huge number of photos in this post! I just was having so much with this photo shoot and simply embracing the silliness of it all that I had trouble choosing a smaller number of pictures to share.
As you can see, I had improvise when it came to my belt because I don’t own a gold one! Lots of silver ones but the only one that really seemed to work was this burgundy bow belt which picked up the colors in my bomber jacket perfectly. It is an unlikely color combination and one that I may have never even considered if not for Sheila and her beautiful birthday outfit. Just another reason to look to other stylish people for inspiration!
What do you think of this outfit combination and the color palette? Have you been getting dressed up lately just for the fun of it?
And now I am going to leave you with a pile of pictures!
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee

Sheila (of Ephemera)
Aw, Shelbee, this is so…overwhelming! THANK YOU! I’m so honoured and thankful to you for both featuring me and considering me as an inspiration! I LOVE your twist on this outfit – isn’t that skirt just the best?? – the touches of red are FABULOUS! And you even dug up some of my old posts? Ha, oh you are such a dear! I haven’t even looked at these in a decade (grin).
I’ve known of you for yonks, and really, we should totes be blogger buds. I’m always shy about reaching out to people, but this needs rectifying, stat!
Dressing up – just for the heck of it – is good for us! It’s good for our mental health, and it makes those who see us feel happy. I heard a great quote (from Queer Eye): “Self-care isn’t selfish.” Let’s face the world with elan!

Aw, Sheila, thank YOU so much for being such a wonderful inspiration in the blogging world and for sharing your positive energy and amazing style with us! Um, yes, we should totally be blogger buddies! LOL. The more fabulous women who join together, the bigger difference we can make! And that Queer Eye quote is one that I use all the time to remind myself and others that self care is never selfish. I even wrote a post about that a long time ago, appropriately titled, Self Care is Never Selfish. I just got so excited, too, by your use of the word “elan”! It’s a new word for me. I had to go look it up, but now I will use it, for sure! Gosh, I am such a word nerd. But I really do excited about that stuff! This was such a fun outfit to recreate and I will totally be stalking on your outfits for more inspiration going forward! Keep shining bright, my friend!

What a beautiful outfit! Great inspiration and great copy! I love your background too: there is similar church with a red door in our town that I should use for a backdrop.

I look fabulous in this outfit, Shelbee. You are definitely in your element here and it shows in every piece of your ansamble. Love the skirt and the red belt is a great choice as well as multiple gold chains. Gold is having a moment, so big tick for that.

Anna, thanks so much! This was a really fun inspiration to recreate and Sheila is just so cool and stylish! I never used to like gold jewelry but since I started blogging I have grown a new appreciation for it. Now I generally go back and forth with gold and silver. It really depends on which metal looks better with the colors I am wearing. I hope you have a fabulous weekend!
