How to Wear Over the Knee Socks Over 40 and Link Up On the Edge #14
I don’t really think this classifies as a legitimate “how to” post because it is really simple. You pull on some cute over the knee socks with an above the knee skirt or dress (or shorts) no matter what your age and the rock the hell out it!
I am going to totally throw my sister under the bus here (sorry, sis)…back in my mid-thirties, my sister would make fun of me for wearing knee high and over the knee socks. She told me it was ridiculous that a woman of my age would dress that way. At first, I tried to disregard her words. But then after I had children, those words started haunting me. I felt like not only should a woman of my age not dress that way…but, horror of horrors, a mother should not dress this way!
Then this same sister is the one who encouraged me to start this little blog to show off my creative side! Yes, the sister who quashed all of my over-the-knee-sock-dreams lifted me up and put me on my crazy little fashion pedestal. So redemption for us all!
Also, the blogging community and Catherine’s (Not Dressed as Lamb) #iwillwearwhatilike movement made me realize that I need to stay true to my own style. And boy, do I love my socks! I literally have 100’s of pairs! Actually, three giant bins full of socks. Most of them are knee high or over the knee. And I can’t part with any of them because I just love them all so much! (#itsasockproblem) I even have a Pinterest board entitled Sock Problem!
So, I say to hell with what anyone says…I am wearing my over the knee socks! I actually was going to be super nervy and title this post “How to Wear Over the Knee Socks When You Are Over 40 and Over 200 Pounds”! The only reason I didn’t use that title is because this is a link up post as well and it just got to be way too long! But in the interest of showing you all that I have no shame of my body, I just put my weight right out there! Well, maybe I have a little shame. Like the normal amount. But I certainly have no shame in my weight. Whatever. I weigh over 200 pounds and I can keep up with my kids (as well as any 40+ mom of young boys). I can fit into clothes that flatter me. And my husband thinks I’m sexy. Enough said.
So, please ladies, wear whatever the hell you want! If you wear it with a smile and some confidence, you will wear it well! By the way, this was probably the most fun I had shooting photos to date! One of the reasons I shared a tremendous amount of photos in this post (#sorrynotsorry). But I compromised with fewer words this time. A big thank you to my confidante, my friend, my photographer, and one of my biggest supporters, Amy! I couldn’t do this without you! Thank you so much! I love you right through that camera lens!

This could be such a philosophical subject Shelbee! Because us bloggers realize that we can wear what we love—they are only clothes, and it can be a creative process! And I’m totally on board with it.
But it’s funny how other women cut each other down about their clothing & style! Even my mom feels like the neighbors will think she’s being to uppity if she dresses too nice!!
We have to get this message to all the woman out there!!
BTW…I just ordered my second pair of OTK boots–kinda the same thing!!!
jodie
http://www.jtouchofstyle.com
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Perfectly stated, Jodie! I used to feel like I was being judged for dressing too nice for the situation. But then I figured I personally would rather be overdressed than under-dressed for any occasion. And if I feel good about the way I am dressed, then who cares what other people think! And yay to OTK boots! I have a few pairs myself and I love them! Rock on, my friend. And your mom, too, because she is all kinds of fabulous!

I agree – we should wear what we want! Fashion rules are silly, it’s only clothes after all!
Really like that dress and scarf together too.

I’ve never understood this ‘you shouldn’t wear X because…’ anyway. I mean, we see women of all shapes and sizes wearing all sorts of things, some of them look good and some of them don’t (and it has nothing to do with age/shape/size/etc but how the personality matches the outfit). So, if socks are yout thing, then you rock them!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
So true, Tiina! Thanks so much for this comment. And sometimes I put on a trendy outfit and look in the mirror and it looks horrible because it is just “not me”. So I agree, if it’s your thing, wear it, rock it, love it! Have a fabulous weekend!

Thank you so much, Melissa! It is so crazy what motherhood does to us especially about our perceptions of our bodies and our styles. In my first years of motherhood, if I saw a mom wearing heels, I would think she was ridiculous. Then it turned to envy. Then I tried it and now I am that mom who sometimes wears heeled shoes just doing my daily mom stuff! Such a great comment! Have a fabulous weekend.

I started fashion blogging three years ago because I was so sick and tired of seeing ageism in fashion. The term ‘Age Appropriate’ such infuriates me, I get so upset every time I see it. But no matter how often women speak out against it, I just keep seeing it. Yes, wear what you like! Love your dress!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Amy, I totally agree with you! If I look in the mirror and like what I am wearing and feel confident in it, then I am going to wear it. There are certainly times when I put on an outfit and think, “Oh, this doesn’t look appropriate” and it may be that I feel too old to wear it or maybe it’s just not my style, but the reason to not wear it is my own reason. It is my choice and it’s about my comfort level…not some arbitrary rule set by the fashion police! So my “rule” is wear what makes you feel great, what makes you comfortable, what stays true to your own style. And always be willing to try new things! Thanks so much for stopping by and for such a wonderful comment!

Hi Shelbee
Well, I am a fan of OTK boots, so it goes without saying I love OTK socks! I have a few pairs from Target, but need to get a few more. I need to find pairs that stay up! Love the peachy pink top and scarf you are wearing, pairs perfectly with your boots!

Thanks so much, Jess! I have the same problem with OTK socks staying up. Some stay better than others, but even the good ones require readjusting throughout the day as I am moving around. I have 2 pairs of OTK boots and I like them okay, but I definitely prefer OTK socks, too!

Totally agree! I wear what I like because some of the trends right now I think are silly! I already wore chokers once in my life and it just feels funny and that it’s not me. I love fashion because each person likes something different and it can give great inspiration to someone else!

I totally agree that you should wear whatever you want and have fun doing it! I don’t know if I would try OTK socks but I never say never about anything! One of my former colleagues (who’s over 50) used to wear some really quirky outfits, including knee high socks over patterned tights. It sounds weird but she always looked amazing. I love to see people wearing unusual outfits 🙂
