Hiking on Poors Island
This past weekend was probably the last one we will see with summery temperatures for the next 8 months, so we decided to take advantage of the gorgeous weather and went for a little hike on Poors Island.
Poors Island is a manmade island situated in the middle of the Black River in Black River, New York. The island was built and maintained by Brookfield Power and is home to ruins of an old paper mill. There is also a large picnic area with grills and tables that could be used for small outdoor gatherings.
The trail around the island is an easy walk requiring little exertion to make your way all the way around. We took our time, stopping about a dozen different times to investigate nature, skip rocks, or just take little walking breaks for the kids. We spent about an hour and half exploring the island and walked just under 2 miles.
All along the trail you can find beautiful fishing spots as well as boat access on one end and canoe portages all the way around. You can view the damn and waterfall from a few different access points. It really is a beautiful trail to walk and enjoy the landscape from the middle of the river.
I wanted to share more history about the island itself, but unfortunately I am having problems finding much information about it online. So I will just share the photos of some of the things that we spotted on our walk.
Of course, as a fashion blogger, one has to also take advantage of a good photo opportunity. Since it is not everyday that I go walking on islands in the middle of rivers, I figured a cute hiking outfit was in order. But then my choice of a Journey hoodie with the graphic in pastels didn’t really lend itself to the perfect fall photos with all the beautiful changing leaves in the background. Oh well. I took the photos anyway.
I love to go exploring with my kids. We have so many hiking trails in this area and have only walked a few of them. We definitely need to start checking out some more trails nearby before the weather gets too cold and the trails are all buried in snow. I love hiking this time of year because the fall foliage is just so darn beautiful. And it only lasts a few very short weeks in northern New York. So if the rain would stop, perhaps we can get outside and enjoy more of it before winter arrives!
What have you been doing for these final weekends of summery weather?
Keeping it on the edge,

That sounds like such a lovely hike! I find I like hikes that bring us near water so much more than those that don’t.

What a beautiful place to hike in the middle of fall. I lived in NY for 60 years and never heard of Black River but then again NY is a big state. I live in the south now and don’t get to experience fall anymore except for the rare occasions that we are in NY sometime during the fall so thanks for sharing your beautiful pictures! PS. And your boys are adorable!

Catherine, thanks so much! NY is a fairly big state and we live in a fairly remote place near Lake Ontario. There are so many beautiful outdoor places to visit nearby…parks and lakes and trails and rivers. It is so beautiful in the fall. My only complaint is that fall is so short lived here. We will have bare trees and snow probably by Halloween! I am glad I could share some pretty fall photos with you!

A really stunning location, love the river, trees and autumn colours and your family outing and then the clothes store, all very lovely. Thanks for sharing.

Charmaine, thank you so much! It is really beautiful in northern New York this time of year, but it is also very short-lived. So we must enjoy every minute of it before we are buried in snow! I hope you have a fantastic weekend.
