Halloween Costume Ideas & Your Own Twist Link Up #13
I can’t believe a year has passed since Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart, and I first debuted our series, Your Own Twist. This is a monthly series where we showcase our own interpretations of a chosen style theme. We share the theme with you ahead of time in case you are interested in joining us. You can see the upcoming themes below if you would like to create your own post around the theme and share it with us in the link party at the end of the post.
For this month’s theme, we have chosen Halloween costume ideas yet again…well, because, why not have some fun in October! Feel free to link your own Halloween costume ideas or any other style or Halloween themed post that you would like. Be sure to check back next month for our Thanksgiving Looks.
When we first launched this series with a Halloween theme, Monica and I both inadvertently created our Halloween costume ideas around our favorite Style Icons. She was the classic Audrey Hepburn and I went for the more eclectic style of Iris Apfel. This year, however, I decided to go for my favorite of all mythical creatures, the magical unicorn. Coincidentally, or perhaps not (because creative minds sometimes think very much alike), Monica had a giant unicorn head of her own. This makes me so happy because I was beginning to think that I was only adult on earth who owned an immense furry head of a mythical creature! I am so grateful and ever so blessed to have friends like Monica who not only accept my weirdness but join right in!
I snagged my big fuzzy unicorn dome on clearance from Target last year. I also grabbed a gorilla and a cow head while I was at it. At 90% off the retail price of $30 per head, how could I go wrong?! They were $3 each. My kids and I have had so much fun with them already and it’s not even Halloween yet. I like to ask people, “Do you want to see what I look like with no makeup on?” When they reply, “Sure,” I show them a picture of myself wearing the unicorn head! Some people laugh, some just glare at me as if I have completely lost mind. But in any event, it makes me laugh every single time. And if I am amused, even by my own ridiculous jokes, then I am one satisfied girl in this world filled with lots of people who have lost their minds.
Back in August, I was invited to participate in a promotion with Dresslily to celebrate their 7th Anniversary. I had to share a baby photo of myself along side a photo of one of my children with the caption “you look just like me.” Can you see a resemblance?
I got to choose a few items from their website in exchange for sharing their anniversary promotion. Archie helped me pick this adorable unicorn skeleton dress so I would have something new and fun for Halloween. While I am not obligated to share this dress on my blog, I couldn’t resist. I mean…it has unicorn skeletons! And purple and teal in the pattern which are perfect for my purple tights and teal velvet booties. And so my Halloween costume was born.
I also styled it with a sequined witch hat (picked up last year at 90% off as well) in case I find the enormous head tedious to maneuver on Halloween night. Tell me which you like better…witch or unicorn?
After we shot these photos, I attended a show at SmitKit Studio. The outfit seemed appropriate to go check out some amazing unique artwork created by local artists. So I ditched the unicorn head and the witch hat and went on my merry way donning unicorn skeletons on my dress. Stay tuned next week when I will be sharing some of the fantastic paintings that were showcased at SmitKit Studio on Saturday. I have my eye on some pieces to begin a collection of original paintings for Archie.
What will you be wearing this Halloween? Do let me know in the comments or just add a link to the party! And remember to go check out the details of Monica’s unicorn costume as well!

Thanks, Mireille! I cannot even describe how happy I was that Monica also had a unicorn head! I thought I was the only weirdo to own such a thing!

Look at Archie! What a cute boy, yes you two have the same mouth! If I ever will visit the US I wil go when it is Halloween! Oh how I love it, but we don’t do much here to it. Those heads!! Hilarious!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Nancy, thanks so much! Oh my word, the heads are still making me laugh! This past weekend, one of Jeff’s friends put on the gorilla head and was jumping around like an ape and chasing the children. I never laughed so hard in my life!

My first Hallowe’en related post goes live tomorrow – so I’ll definitely link up – but I had to comment:
WHERE did you get those boots?!
Oh, my, goodness. I am in love with them, lol!
Also – I vote unicorn head over witch hat – but both are fun!

Thanks so much, Tea! I can’t wait to see your Halloween post! These boots are from Shoe Dazzle. They have so many cute ones and if you wait for the deals, you can get amazing prices! If you decide to join, please use my code! And I think you get your first pair for $10. But always remember to skip the month between the 1st and the 5th so you don’t get charged. Unfortunately, my boots are only available in sizes 5.5 and 6. If you have small feet, go get them!

A sensational outfit!! You and your child are very much alike, Shelbee – mine look like they’re somebody else’s!! Lol.. Halloween is not as big a thing here in Australia, maybe because it’s starting to get hotter and the days are getting longer and it just isn’t that spooky at this time of year but I just love seeing all the fabulous costumes and fun you have with it!! Enjoy the festivities!!

Donna, thank you so much! It’s funny because I never really got into Halloween at all until the past few years. My kids love it and so I could either fight them or join them. I am having much more fun joining them! Plus this unicorn duo with Monica might go down in history as one of the best blogger collaborations in my blogging career! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

The unicorn head 🦄has FAR more charm, humor and magic than the witch.
Some creativity adding to the witch concept might be fun…
GLENDA THE GOOD Witch of IMPEACHMENT. You could have “pussy ears” peeking out from the sides of the hat, angel wings and a cats tail…🧙♀️ 😻 🧚♀️??

Oh, Jude, you always have the best ideas! So creative you are. Thanks so much for sharing. I hope you have a magical weekend ahead!

So fun! Love this unicorn/witch costume! It’s both so unique and whimsical. You can’t go wrong and how cool that Monica had one as well. Yay! My son will be a fireman this year. I haven’t figured out what I want to be yet. Story of my life! I hope your week went well and wishing you a great weekend!

Thanks so much, Maureen! I have had so much fun with this $3 unicorn head already! I probably won’t wear it on Halloween though because it is rather large and tedious to walk around in it. I bought so many costumes last year at 90% off that my kids have a pile to choose from. We also have 3 or 4 different Halloween events to dress up for so they can easily choose a different costume for each event. If your son is a fireman, perhaps you can be the cat that he rescued from a tree! I hope you all enjoy all the fun festivities and have a great weekend!

This is such a fun post Shelbee! At $3 how could you leave the furry animal heads on the shelf? I’d have bought them too! The unicorn head reminds me of the episode of Killing Eve where Villanelle wears a cartoon pig mask to murder someone…not one for the kids! I love the teal and purple together, and the dress is fabulous! Thanks for linking up!

Emma, thanks so much! I agree with you…it was such a bargain, I had to bring these monstrous things home! I have not watched Killing Eve and it sounds like it is definitely not one for the kids!

Haha, thanks, Lauren! I usually don’t get dressed up for Halloween. This is all new because my children demand it!

Love this post, you made me smile with your furry head and it looks so much fun 🙂 Great dress too. Thanks for sharing at The Weekly Link Up.

Thanks so much, Claire! The furry head still cracks me up! I just made it my Facebook profile picture until Halloween is over!
