How To Find the Perfect Wedding Dress for Your Body Type
Guest post by Georgia Selih
On a day as important as your wedding day, you want to look your absolute best. Not only because you will be in just about a million pictures, but also because you want to focus on the day, your feelings and your partner, as opposed to whether or not your dress is slipping down, rising up or does not fit properly. But unfortunately, the way we’d all love to shop – see something on the model and simply pick it up – doesn’t work in reality. We all have different figures, shapes and sizes that need to be catered to. So let’s pick out the perfect wedding dress for your body shape.
Tall and lean
If you want to show off your lean physique, then you are in luck, because most dresses are made with your body type in mind. Opt for anything bodycon and floor-length – from a mermaid to A-line – and you will look stunning. However, if you want something that will give your body more curves, you need to use a few simple techniques. For some added hip and bum, you can opt for a puffy ballgown that will go from a tight top to a princess gown, giving you fullness in the lower half. And if adding to your bust is your goal, then a bodice with ruching will give the desired effect. Always go floor-length, to make sure you avoid looking like you’ve borrowed your dress from a shorter friend.
Plus size and curvy
Gone are the days when the only options for plus sized girls were the long-sleeve, completely covered, sad dresses. Welcome to a world where curves are celebrated and dresses for you aren’t simply larger sizes of dresses made for thin women. There is now such a variety of plus size wedding gowns that you can choose according to your body shape, not just size. Some things you should stay clear of are princess ballgowns which will do nothing for your figure, as well as free draping dresses that will probably cling to all the wrong places.
Hourglass
Congratulations, you have the body type that women across the world are trying to achieve, now all you need to do is use it the right way. A mermaid or trumpet style will hug your curves in all the right places and give proportion to your body. An A-line dress will work wonders, as it is made to cinch in the waist and accentuate your natural figure. If you want something unusual, go for a wrap dress with an embellished belt. If you are a bustier bride, strapless dresses might be hard to pull off, but cap sleeves or a halter neck can look amazing. Avoid imperial waists and drop waists – you want it exactly where it naturally is.
Pear shape
The pear, or triangle shape, is one that a lot of brides struggle to style. You can tackle it in two ways: balance by adding volume to the top or reducing volume on the bottom. If you want to draw attention to the top of the dress, you can opt for a deep V-neck or a ruffly sweetheart. For the bottoms, a great option is A-line because it will naturally conceal the hips. Try to avoid the mermaid cut because it will draw attention to the disproportion.
Apple shape
If you are fuller around the waist and thinner elsewhere, then you have an apple-shaped body. An easy way to work around this is to find a dress with a high waist. Something like a high A-line can work great because the elevated waist will sit above the widest part of your body and let it blend into the skirt. A deep neckline will also work great to visually elongate your body. Skip a trumpet, mermaid, and bodycon cut because they will draw attention to your mid-section.
Most importantly, chose a gown you feel amazing in. How you feel is much more important than how you look, so make sure it’s comfortable and fits well. If you want to wear a family dress passed down to you, take it to a seamstress to have it fitted to your body. Remember that the dress will look a lot differently when accompanied by all of the accessories, as well as the bouquet, so try on the entire outfit before making any decisions.

Good tips. In Greece every bride I have been to her wedding, decided for the princess style, which is always cute but ,hey, maybe a bride should consider these other options as well!
