Got Goals? These 4 Strategies Can Help You Achieve Them
We all want the best in life whether it is material possessions, better health, improved relationships, or financial gain. However, the gap between what we want and what we currently have can be rather vast. But there are things we can do to transverse that space between wanting and having. This article will discuss 4 different strategies that can help us get to where we want to be in life.
SMART Targets
The first approach is one strategy that has been tried and tested with much success. It’s SMART targets, which is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely goals.
SMART targets are a really great way to set goals as this method encourages you to track your progress on your way to achievement and success. The SMART target approach is also an effective way for keeping you focused on things that you can realistically achieve.
For example, ruling the world wouldn’t be a SMART goal because it is rather unrealistic for most people to achieve such a lofty objective within their lifetime. It is just not realistic or achievable, so setting your sights on something like that will most likely leave you falling short of your intentions. However, a goal like running your own business or writing a book is absolutely achievable if you set your intentions and take the necessary steps towards that end goal.
Life coaching
There is one part of the goal setting process that SMART targets tend to leave out. While SMART targets help you to outline specific goals, they do not provide you with the necessary motivation for taking the steps toward achieving your goals. And motivation is absolutely fundamental in the process of working towards what we want to attain in life. Working with a professional life coach who is trained in this area can help you establish why you want the things you want in life while helping you outline a plan for how to get them.
One of the main benefits of working with a life coach or even a theorist is being held accountable to another person for the steps you are taking toward your goals. Accountability is a major component in goal achievement and can boost your motivation levels that will support your journey toward success.
The Law Of Attraction
A different way of approaching your goals and intentions is to apply a specific philosophy or well thought out perspective. The Law Of Attraction is one approach that incorporates taking decisive action towards your goals while also changing your mindset about your entire life in general.
The theory that underlies the Law of Attraction is that you will attract what you think you deserve. If you shift the vibrations and thoughts that you are putting out into the universe to a positive form, the universe has a tendency to respond to those vibrations with positive things. In essence, positive begets positive while negative begets negative. It is all about the way you frame your intentions and energy.
It is a known fact that positive people are often the most successful in life. This is emphatically true in interpersonal relationships as people respond in kind to the type of energy they encounter. If you are warm and positive in your approach to other people, they will respond likewise which is a great foundation for strong and healthy relationships. A similar philosophy can be applied to achieving other life goals as well.
Mini habits
The final approach to effective goal setting is to develop mini habits. We all know that taking that first step is the hardest part of the process. But once we begin our action toward a specific goal, we can build momentum to keep going in the right direction. It is all about getting motivated and the best way to stay motivated is to take action. Any action towards your goals, no matter how small, is better than no action at all.
For example, if your goal is to run a marathon but you are unable to motivate yourself to jog for even 30 minutes, developing mini habits is a great approach to start the process. The mini habit approach would recommend starting with 5 minutes of jogging and gradually increasing that time until you establish a regular habit. The idea is that once you have begun taking small actions toward a specific goal, it is much easier to maintain and build momentum throughout the entire process in the direction you want to go.
What are you goals? What actions have you taken in the direction of achieving them?

Thank you, Kathrine! Honestly, I think any type of counselor, if you connect with them, is super beneficial to help guide us or just be a sounding board for us. It makes a world of difference!

These are certainly little steps that help a lot! I think braking it down makes goals look way more durable and less scary 🙂

Thanks for reminding me of SMART targets. We had to use those in writing objectives for our school when I was on the campus improvement team. They work!!

Mini habits definitely work – they’re building blocks to a bigger change. That said, I think I’ve picked up a few bad habits since lockdown began!
