Fashion Faux Blah & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #738

A fashion faux pas. A false step. A style mistake. A bit of the blah. It can happen to anyone. Even the most style savvy and fashion forward folks can create unsavory outfit combinations.

In this case, I don’t think I necessarily made a literal fashion faux pas as this outfit is wearable without being entirely terrible. It is more of a fashion faux blah.

While I often rely on a black column of clothing beneath my kimono robes, this particular black column was a bit too much and resulted in very unflattering photographs. But I am sharing them anyway because this is real life. Some days you look great in your clothing. Other days, maybe not so much.

I was gifted this fringed leopard print kimono robe over a year ago. This was the first way that I styled it but I decided not to share it at the time because I really disliked the blahbiness of the black.

I thought that a black column of leggings and tunic would allow the beautiful colors and print of the kimono robe to really stand out. But it ended up dominating the whole look and completely distracting from the beautiful details of my robe.

To coordinate with my kimono, I added a funky long raggy tassel necklace that I picked up during one of my North Carolina road trips, copper earrings that were made by my dear friend Michelle, and tan studded ankle boots. I carried my purple Teddy Blake bag for a blast of bright color against the black, white, and tan. But it was still not enough to break up the black blob!

You win some. You lose some. But as long as you keep on smiling, even a terrible outfit is not so bad.

Thanks so much, Pamela! The leopard kimono robe was definitely better layered over the feminine dress in my previous post. Although when I am not photographing an outfit, I tend to almost always have a black column as my base. But it really is a pain to photograph black! Wishing you a very happy and blessed new year, my friend.

Even if you think the outfit doesn’t work, others might think it looks great. It’s the feel isn’t it. I often dislike a outfit when I try to hard. We can’t be fabulous every day right, lol.

I agree with you completely! It is all in how you feel wearing an outfit. It doesn’t matter how it looks if it feels terrible, right? And vice versa! But even when we feel awful, we are still pretty freaking fabulous!

It is funny how we think we’ve nailed a look, and then we look at the photos! And, it all comes crashing down around our ears! I like the black column. I actually think the robe is what is kinda blah…but, that could be my monitor. Your smile is always on point, though! Thanks for the link up!

Thanks so much, Marsha! I knew my blogging friends would understand! Black columns are my go-to on most days…but when it comes time for photographs I have to rethink that. I do love this kimono over my brown and green floral dress though.

A column of black is such a winner…except when it’s not, right? This is a great example of a situation in which black, which often feels like an ideal background, can actually be overwhelming to a light colored, delicate print, even if the black feels like it should pick up the black in the print and blend well. I loved seeing the close-up of your boots and amazing tassel necklace; I’m going to have to try making a (smaller) shabby chic raggy tassel necklace myself. I know, I’m not a major boho girl but I do love all kinds of tassel necklaces, and I have a couple bags of ribbons and lace that would be perfect for this project.

Sally, thanks so much! It’s like you read my mind…I was definitely thinking the black column would pick up the black print in the robe, but it was a big blah-by fail! Isn’t this raggy necklace so cool? I bought it because I wanted to try to make some as well. I have been collecting all sorts of ribbons and things, but I keep forgetting to grab the jewelry parts I need from the craft store. I would love to see what kind of raggy shaggy boho necklace you create!

I don’t think it’s a bad outfit, Shelbee! I bet if you put it on again another day when it’s warmer and sunny, you’ll probably find that you actually like it! That kind of thing happens to me a lot, I think it depends on my hormones lol!!
    Big hugs

Aw, thanks so much, Suzy! Actually, what I really dislike is that high neck on the black tunic. I need to have my neck and collar bone more exposed, I think. But everything depends on my hormones these days! Haha.
