Extra SIA Outfit: “Suntan” by Françoise Gilot & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #715
Sometimes when I am presented with a Style Imitating Art challenge, I end up creating more than one outfit. Then I choose the best one to share while the other ones end up getting lost in my photo archives.
As I was brainstorming topic ideas for today’s post, I kept coming up blank so I started scrolling through my old photo archives from last summer to see which outfits have been abandoned. I found these photos that I had taken for an SIA challenge from last June featuring “Suntan” by Françoise Gilot.
This yellow tie dye shirtdress was actually the original outfit I had styled for that challenge, but ultimately I was not pleased with the muted yellow for representing the artwork. I ended up wearing a black skater dress with a bright yellow ruana instead. Not only do I prefer the more saturated yellow of the ruana in the first outfit but I also prefer the silhouette of the skater style dress over the less shapely cut of this midi shirtdress.
Although this is not a “favorite” outfit by any means, it’s not a bad look and it illustrates my ever growing affection for shades of yellow. Yellow was never a color that I could wear without looking like I had a bad case of jaundice. However, as perimenopause is in full effect for me, I have noticed changes in my skin tone that are allowing me opportunities to wear a variety of yellow hues without appearing yellow myself.
Because this particular yellow is a softer muted shade, I think I might prefer it paired with other softer muted colors. But the outfit was inspired by the artwork which contains a palette of three clearly defined colors…yellow, black, and white. So I started with the dress and then added only black and white things…a black straw hat with a black and white band, a black scarf with a white dotted pattern, my black cowgirl boots, an ivory bucket bag, and black and ivory jewelry.
I am not going to share information about the art or the artist in this post because you can read that information in my original post from last summer. Actually, I am not going to share much more of anything except a few more photos. I am currently visiting my sister for the week but will be packing up the car to head home probably right now while you are reading this…if it is Friday morning when you are reading this. If it is Friday afternoon, then I am already home doing laundry and getting back to finishing the mudroom makeover.
I also have two fun outfit posts coming to you on Monday for our next Style Imitating Art challenge as well our July Songful Style challenge where Marsha, Suzy, and I will be sharing our outfits inspired by Cam‘s 2015 hit “Burning House”.
I hope you all have a most wonderful weekend!

Such a pretty yellow dress. I just ordered a yellow dress, I hope I like yellow on me. Thanks for the party.

I’m very fond of yellow, although there are some shades that really don’t look great on me. But yellow is a good color on you! I’m glad your skin tone is cooperating, because it’s amazing with your beautiful dark hair.

Thanks so much! I do love that my skin is cooperating with yellow but I am also at that age now where I’m going to wear whatever colors I want regardless of how they look! Oh my gosh, Michelle, turning 50 has really empowered me in so many ways!

I hear you in regard to wearing what you like. I find myself adding to my tee shirt collection from Mahogany Mommies. I’ve been wearing my tee that says “Black history is everyone’s history,” trying to use my white privilege to show solidarity against racism. It’s been positively received by both white people and people of color. I am glad. But mostly I wear it because I’m pissed if that racism is still problem. And eff racists!
I remember feeling empowered at 50. It’s so awesome! Guess what? 60 is just good. 😀

Yes! Personally, I think each decade just gets better. Now if only the rest of the world could grow and learn with age. We seem to be collectively getting dumber and dumber as our society ages. Ugh.

A POSITIVE effect of peri-menopause??? Yes, lean into it, my friend! Yellow is a tricky color that can definitely bring out all the redness in my skin for a “sunburned” rather than “suntan” effect 😀

Hahaha, right? There have been a few positive effects for me and I try to embrace them all!

Quite understand why you chose the yellow and black outfit, much more pizazz! The yellow midi is great when you’re having a ladylike day don’t you think?
Seems you’re having a yellow season! I’ve featured you in your ‘maize faze’ in my Monochromatic Dressing today!
School summer holidays were blissful when I look back, but my memory isn’t what it once was, haha!!!

Thanks so much, Pamela! Yes, I agree with you completely. The first outfit is definitely sassier while the shirtdress is a bit more modest. I really started being drawn to yellows last summer and I am still loving them. But I also still love wearing blues and greens. My school summer holidays keep getting further away in my memory, too!

I was actually thinking of it from a Mum’s viewpoint! It was probably not as blissful as I remember!!!

That is another fabulous interpretation (in fact I think I personally like this one better)… I love that it’s such a sunny yellow outfit with just touches of black and white.

Thank you so very much, Joanne! I am all about sunny yellow right now. I just painted the mudroom ceiling in a similar color!

It’s so strange that our coloring changes so much as we age. I really need to wear more saturated colors now, or I disappear. I’m finding I like yellow, orange, and red more and more. I really like this outfit, but I can see why you chose the other one for the SIA. Thanks for the link up.
Have a wonderful weekend, Shelbee! I hope you have time to unwind.

Thanks, Marsha! I am a little surprised by how much my skin tone and coloring has changed in recent years. I started really loving reds, yellows, and oranges last summer. I still love the blues and greens, too. I’m just gonna wear it all. Because one of the beautiful things about aging is the empowerment to wear whatever the heck we want to wear!

You look beautiful, you created a really interesting stylization. I also like to wear a cashmere scarf, which is a perfect complement to my stylizations.
