Embracing the Tights Trend for Fall & Link Up On the Edge #160
After four years of blogging in the style niche, you would think that I would pay more attention to fashion trends as they come and go. But honestly, I have always just worn what I like regardless of trends. Granted, when a certain style is on trend, it is much easier to find in stores. But I hold onto most things in my closet even when they drift out of fashion because they will always cycle back around.
Fashion is fickle that way. Certain styles go through mild metamorphoses over the course of a few years before they fade into the What Not To Wear abyss. They rest out of sight for a few years before some style icon decides to resurrect the trend and bring it back into fashion. Newer, different, tweaked a bit, modernized, but still the same old recycled thing with a contemporary twist. It happens so often and with such prevalence that I am often unsure of what has come and gone and returned again.
Apparently, tights are a major trend for Fall 2019. The funny thing is I never considered them a trend at all. I have always sort of classified tights as a consistent staple in a woman’s wardrobe. Maybe it’s because I live in a super cold climate and if I have any hope of wearing dresses or skirts between the months of October and May, I better have some extra layers for warmth. One cannot go bare legged in a North Country Winter without the risk of frost bite. So tights remain in constant rotation for me.
As a matter of course, I have accumulated quite an extensive collection of colorful tights. But what have I not accumulated an extensive collection of? I mean, my closet abounds with kimonos, graphic tees, denim of all sorts, dresses in a million different styles, coats and cardigans aplenty. Tights are just another necessary accessory to inject a little bit fun into anyone’s style game. Specifically mine.
Now I don’t know if colorful opaque tights were once reserved for young children. I am getting that impression from articles like 10 fun (and grown-up) ways to wear tights this season. Frankly, I don’t give a hoot if I appear juvenile or grown-up in my tights, I am going to wear what I wear the way I want to wear it. Sometimes I like the cutesy effect provided by a whimsical pair of tights. Other times, I prefer the edgier vibe that patterned tights bring. PopSugar has rounded up 32 Winter Outfits That Will Make You Excited to Break Out Your Tights. If you need inspiration styling tights this season, you can also check out these 25 Ways to Wear Tights.
Remember my Fab 40’s post from last month when I styled tights with clogs at the suggestion of a friend? I mentioned that I found this combination to be quite a marvelous thing and that I would be adding more clogs to my wardrobe for the sole purpose of pairing them with tights, like I did in my last Your Own Twist post featuring shorts with tights and clogs.
So here I am again doing it again but this time I opted for a monochromatic pairing of olive green opaque tights with olive green clogs. I am very partial to the contrasting tan sole on the clogs and the cute ankle strap keeps me from twisting my ankle when my foot slides around. For some reason, any time I wear a clog style shoe of any sort, I twist my ankle. An ankle strap helps minimize my injuries but it in no way prevents a klutz from being a klutz.
I thrifted this Gap swing dress in a cotton broadcloth and I am really unsure if it is dark navy or black. It appears navy in certain lighting, but it definitely looks black in these photos. Either way, it works well with olive green especially as we transition into Fall. The lighter layers in autumn hues are totally the way to go. And my olive green floral bomber jacket is the perfect topper.
Sometime during the Spring (I can’t remember when), I went a little crazy adding tights to my cart at Sock Dreams. I have had the opportunity to style some of them already but I am getting more and more excited now that cooler weather is on the horizon. Expect to see some crazy legs over here coming soon!
Along with all the brightly colored and interesting patterned tights, I do love the innocence of opaque white tights. I have been toying around with styling options for both white tights and white thigh highs. I haven’t created an outfit yet that has wowed me enough to photograph it. But I will work my magic. And apparently I will be right on trend as White Tights are 2019’s Hosiery Trend You Probably Never Saw Coming. However, once I build an outfit around white tights, I guarantee you will see me coming!
What are your thoughts about tights as a style statement? Grown-up or childish? Sophisticated or silly?
And now your featured favorites from last week.
Anna of Mutton Years Style and I shared her post, Reflecting on Madeira Outfits Past. Pondering about time, Anna takes a look back on her fashion choices and compares them to how she dresses today. I think she looks fantastic in all of the photos, but it is always interesting to see how our tastes change over time.
Stefanie of The Style Safari shared some very provocative thoughts in her post, What’s after Blogging? In a generation of virtual influencers, she poses some wonderfully intriguing questions of where this whole blogging journey will lead each of us individually. Definitely worth reading! Plus how fantastic is her dress?
Regan of Nifty 50 and Fabulous shared her post, Friday with Friends-Sugar and Sleep. If you struggle with either sleep issues or sugar addiction (I know I do), there is so much helpful information in Regan’s post. Or maybe you just need a community of women who can relate to the midlife struggle, all the more reason to go check out Regan’s blog!

Tights are a must in my opinion. Especially since I live in Chicago with our wonderful weather. Love your matching tights and shoes! I adore the shape of this swing dress too. Thanks so much for the link up!

Thanks so much, Kathrine! Chicago weather is very similar to our weather in Northern New York, so you totally understand the necessity of tights! Have a great weekend!

Love the tights with those shoes. I did not know they were a trend this season. I think the cycle of trends coming and going and coming again is so much faster now than when we were younger. Probably because of Instagram.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Julie! I really never even considered tights a trend at all. I thought everyone who lived in colder climates wore tights! Ha. It is so hard to keep up and every fashion magazine will list different trends each year. If you compiled all of their lists together, I think pretty much everything you could think of would be on trend!

A big trend for this year, coloured tights. I love how you paired with the same coloured shoe to elongate the legs. Have a great weekend Shelbee xx

Thanks so much, Laurie! I was super excited that these tights were the exact same color as the shoes! I love the monochromatic look, but I am excited to try some contrasting tights looks as well. Have a wonderful weekend!

I’m with you. I always thought tights were a basic. But, heck, if it means there are going to be more options in the stores, I’m all for it! Love the olive green. And those shoes are fabulous. Not your usual version of a clog and very chic with the matching tights.
There were so many interesting tights in the 1960s, in great colors, patterns and weaves. My mom wore them a lot with mini dresses and I remember how cool she looked!

Thanks so much, Theresa! Oh, the styles of the 60’s are some of my favorites with the bold colors and short hemlines! I could have totally lived then! I hope you have the most wonderful weekend!

Those tights are such a gorgeous colour and I love them in the combination. I am SO with you on this one. I put it another way – I hadn’t realised that coloured gifts weren’t in fashion. It was the same for fishnets a couple of years ago. Umm, but they’ve always been in my drawer! Next it will be patterns, or have I missed that one? Anyway, I have too many pairs to mention and I am so pleased that the weather is now good again for them. I keep going with them for as much of summer as I can but some of this year (including earlier this week in London) defeated me. Looking forward to seeing more of your tights in the coming months!! Kx
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Karen, thank you so much! From the articles I was reading, I believe patterned and logo’d tights are trending, too. I think I saw Chanel and Gucci tights covered in the logos (they were going for around $100 a pair). The logos aren’t really my thing (nor is the price tag), but I will totally wear plaid or polka dotted tights! I wore tights during the summer, too, but will definitely wear them more often in the fall and winter. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I’ve never been brave enough to try colored tights – our VP is super awesome at using them all winter!

Tamar, you would look so stinking cute in colored tights! Maybe start with a darker color rather than a crazy bright color. Have a wonderful weekend!

Love, love, love the shoes/clogs! Where did you get them? As far as tights are concerned, you my friend, rock them like nobodies business! Like you, I have no choice once the weather turns, however I hate them! I just feel so uncomfortable and constricted when I wear tights…

Debbie, thank you so much! I got these shoes from a very sketchy website called Miss Arty. I ordered on a whim and read reviews afterwards (bad shopper) only to find that so many people never received their orders and I got super nervous. I ordered 3 pairs of shoes from them. Fortunately, my package arrived very quickly and the shoes were crazy cute (but not the highest quality).
As for tights, I love them and I used to hate to wear them, like you, because I found them super uncomfortable, too. But since I have lost weight, I actually find them more comfortable. And the tights from Sock Dreams are incredibly soft and they stay in place. At around $10 a pair, they are totally worth it.
I hope you have an amazing holiday weekend! We will be spending today at the Penn State game celebrating my niece’s birthday.

I’m with you—tights are not a trend, they’re a staple! Now, colored tights would be a trend, and I love how you’ve styled yours with the same color shoe. It’s super flattering and elongating!

Thanks, Cheryl! I like the contrast between bright tights with different colored shoes, but the monochromatic look is super fun, too. I have lots more tights coming to the blog once the weather really cools down. Have a great weekend.

Oh yes tights are a must for me when weather dips below 50! It doesn’t matter if they a trending or not! I really like the olive green shade of yours! I’ve never seen that before!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Laura, thanks so much! I had a huge collection of crazy patterned tights but I didn’t have many in fun solid colors. I am so glad that I found all these cute colored ones. You should check out Sock Dreams. I have been shopping with them for about decade. They have so many great tights and socks! Enjoy the holiday weekend!

Ha, you lost me when you called your shoes clogs. Not clogs. Clogs have uppers that are stapled or nailed to the bases. You are wearing platform wedges. Education session over.
The whole “trend” thing is a marketing ploy. Tights, plaid, leopard, jewel tones — annual, eternal fall things.
My, my, my. Aren’t I cantankerous today! Maybe I’m jealous — it’s still in the 90s here.
Bring on a long weekend! Have a good one!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Hahaha, Anne! I guess the wooden like platforms reminded me of clogs…so can I call them clog-like wedges?! Or perhaps cloggish platforms? And yes, of course, marketing ploys abound all around, my cantankerous friend!
I am not jealous of your 90 degree temperatures. You know I can’t deal with that shit!
We are up wicked early to head to a Penn State game today. Enjoy your weekend!

I do love tights for Fall- I need to add to my collection! I love the olive green with the olive shoe. I also want to try socks this year. Swing dresses are great and so comfy, I like how you gave the dress added shape with that cool bomber jacket. Olive is one of my favorite Fall shades .
