DIY Corduroy Wrap & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #728
Happy Friday, y’all! Today I am sharing a brown corduroy wrap that I made for myself last summer. I actually already shared this piece for a thrifty style challenge last August when I first made it. I found the lightweight brown corduroy fabric on the clearance shelf at JOANN. I was drawn to the tribal symbols and the little embroidered figures of men on horses, but I also considered that the print might not be very respectful to indigenous peoples. Probably the reason the fabric was on sale. But it was there, super inexpensive, wanting me to buy it because I adore all things that represent the indigenous tribes of the Americas. So for me, this print represents my respect, adoration, and wonder for the ancient cultures that were here long before my ancestors.
It was really easy to make. I just took one of the many wraps that are in my closet room to use as my pattern. I traced it onto the corduroy, cut out one big piece from the fabric, and hemmed the cut edges. The entire process took less than an hour.
This style of wrap is generally referred to as a ruana which is defined as “a very thick, soft and sleeveless square or rectangular blanket with an opening in the center for the head to go through with a slit down the front to the hem. A ruana may or may not come with a hood to cover the head.”
The open front allows for a variety of different styling techniques especially if you incorporate a belt. In the first group of photos, I wore a reversible obi belt over the ruana. In the second set, you can see it with no belt and also with the belt under the ruana. In the final set of photos below, the belt is underneath the ruana but I draped the right side of the wrap over my left shoulder for a scarf effect.
I love browns and blues paired together so I wore the wrap over a bright turquoise maxi dress which matches the bits of turquoise embroidery in the ruana. In addition to my obi belt, I accessorized with my brown straw fedora, my brown thrifted cowgirl boots, my wooden owl necklace, leather feather earrings, and bracelet stacks.
After I finished making the ruana, I had enough fabric remaining to make a short poncho which I will share soon. I styled it over this same dress for a similar but different look.
I haven’t worked on any clothing projects lately as I have been preoccupied with weaving rugs, making fabric coil baskets, and baking for a football team. I should probably get to sharing some of those projects here as well. But I have been so busy, so tired, and so lazy lately!

Joanne, thanks so much! I have so many wraps and I keep adding more! But then I rarely wear them because I spend most of my time indoors where I don’t need them. Hahaha

You are so creative! It is hard to believe it’s cordoroy as the fabric flows so nicely. Love the color combo too. I wouldn’t think of pairing those two colors together, but they look so nice. Thanks for the party.

Amy, thanks so much! It is not a very heavy fabric and the corduroy is very small. The underneath of the fabric is a little silky which helps it to flow with ease as opposed to a heavier, stiffer corduroy. I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend!

Love your quick and easy new creation Shelby! Brown with the blue dress is a great color combination. The styling with the wrap over one shoulder is especially chic. It gives me some great inspiration for a few very large scarves I have, but find troublesome to style. Thanks for sharing and hope you have a good weekend!

I really like your ruana, Shelbee—it looks very versatile (and love that it honors native Americans). Thank you so much for the feature!

What a great idea for a wrap. I love that it’s really easy to make. I can do this, and I’m not handy at all.

Thanks, Nicole! I am really not very good with a sewing machine, but this is simple enough that you can’t make too many mistakes!

Great inspiration here! How good this wrap/ruana/throw looks with a maxi dress, not a cover-up just very much part of the outfit!

Beautiful! I love corduroy. I plan to remake some of my wraparound skirts into wraps. At the moment, I’m working on Christmas pillowcases for the grandkids. Shouldn’t be difficult, but the directionality of the fabric, and the fact I want to make them a little fancy, is a challenge for my allergy ridden mind at the moment.

Thanks, Michelle! I love the idea of turning skirts into wraps. Your Christmas pillow cases sounds really fun, too! I have so much going on right now that I can’t get much done these days. I need to give you a call for a catch up session!
