DIY Corduroy Wrap & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #728

Happy Friday, y’all! Today I am sharing a brown corduroy wrap that I made for myself last summer. I actually already shared this piece for a thrifty style challenge last August when I first made it. I found the lightweight brown corduroy fabric on the clearance shelf at JOANN. I was drawn to the tribal symbols and the little embroidered figures of men on horses, but I also considered that the print might not be very respectful to indigenous peoples. Probably the reason the fabric was on sale. But it was there, super inexpensive, wanting me to buy it because I adore all things that represent the indigenous tribes of the Americas. So for me, this print represents my respect, adoration, and wonder for the ancient cultures that were here long before my ancestors.

It was really easy to make. I just took one of the many wraps that are in my closet room to use as my pattern. I traced it onto the corduroy, cut out one big piece from the fabric, and hemmed the cut edges. The entire process took less than an hour.

This style of wrap is generally referred to as a ruana which is defined as “a very thick, soft and sleeveless square or rectangular blanket with an opening in the center for the head to go through with a slit down the front to the hem. A ruana may or may not come with a hood to cover the head.”

The open front allows for a variety of different styling techniques especially if you incorporate a belt. In the first group of photos, I wore a reversible obi belt over the ruana. In the second set, you can see it with no belt and also with the belt under the ruana. In the final set of photos below, the belt is underneath the ruana but I draped the right side of the wrap over my left shoulder for a scarf effect.

I love browns and blues paired together so I wore the wrap over a bright turquoise maxi dress which matches the bits of turquoise embroidery in the ruana. In addition to my obi belt, I accessorized with my brown straw fedora, my brown thrifted cowgirl boots, my wooden owl necklace, leather feather earrings, and bracelet stacks.

After I finished making the ruana, I had enough fabric remaining to make a short poncho which I will share soon. I styled it over this same dress for a similar but different look.

I haven’t worked on any clothing projects lately as I have been preoccupied with weaving rugs, making fabric coil baskets, and baking for a football team. I should probably get to sharing some of those projects here as well. But I have been so busy, so tired, and so lazy lately!
