“Decline of the Day” by Emperor Ham Nghi | Style Imitating Art
It is that time again when we present the artwork for the next SIA challenge. It was Salazar’s turn to choose and she picked an oil painting not necessarily for the work itself but because the artist’s story is so captivating. Keep reading for more details.
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
This Week’s Presenter
Salazar chose this work because it is quite special to her…”not the painting itself, but rather the artist. It’s an impressionist landscape called “Decline of the Day” by Emperor Ham Nghi, the 8th emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, the last feudal dynasty of Vietnam. He was dethroned and exiled to Algiers by the French when he was only 16 years old for opposing their colonial rule. While in exile, he studied painting and sculpting and produced a lot of great works, though sadly most of these were lost during the Algerian War. I was fascinated to learn of this (our history books mostly stop at his exile, nothing more) and thought it would be great to feature one of his paintings in SIA. You can learn more about the Emperor’s artworks here.” Be sure to visit Salazar’s post as well for more details.
The Artwork
Decline of the Day by Emperor Ham Nghi
I personally am drawn to the contrast between the dark earthy tones against the lighter colored horizon. I have no ideas coming immediately to mind for how I will style this one. So I will just browse my closet room until something hits me…it could be a literal something that hits me in there right now though. What a disastrously hazardous area, piled high with shoe boxes and too much clothing!
If you want to be featured with your art inspired outfit in Salazar’s round up post on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, be sure to submit your photos to her at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.
Happy styling!

I kind of thought the same thing, Suzy! I am thinking some kind of green column dressing is in order and I am going to use my snowy background to reflect the horizon in the painting. Then darker colors it will be. I just need to figure out which ones and which clothing. Haha.

I would have no clue how to create an outfit based on this!

I am struggling a little bit. I am thinking a green column of some sort. And my snowy background will be the horizon. But that’s as far as I have gotten!

Oo what interesting inspirations. Feeling lots of darker tones layers in some way?
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Isn’t it a mesmerizing piece, Tamar? I keep finding myself falling deeper into it. I am leaning towards some kind of dark green column of clothing to mimic the trees. And since all of my backgrounds are snowy, I will incorporate the background to represent the lighter colors on the horizon. My creativity is moving in the right direction!

What beautiful colors to pick inspiration from! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Thanks, Joanne! I was struggling, but I went into my closet room this morning and allowed my creative muses to speak. I think I found the perfect thing! I just need to put it all together and take the pictures now. But I may wait until tomorrow. It is wicked cold again today!

The painting by Emperor Ham Nghi shows a fascinating palette of muted, earth colors along with gently curving shapes. Can’t wait to see how different style bloggers interpret the colors and mood of this landscape.

Thanks so much, Carol! I just photographed my outfit today and I went for a green column of color with some other earth tones mixed in. I, too, am looking forward to seeing all of the interpretations! Anyone is welcomed to join…you don’t have to be a style blogger or even a blogger. You just need your own wardrobe and a creative eye!

I’m thinking an autumn vibe here and lots of layers to represent the rolling landscape, but I doubt I’ll get the time between now and tomorrow to join in.

Thanks, Suzanne! I hear you on the time thing! I feel like I am constantly fighting against it. If you are able to join us, that would be awesome! But if not, the next art will be announced next Monday, then you have 8 days instead of 1…if i is something that inspires you! I hope you have a wonderful week.
