Date Night with the Dead & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #649
Jeff and I had a long overdue date night two weeks ago when the in-laws were here to visit for Easter and Spring Break. We took advantage of the overnight childcare and headed off to Funk ’n Waffles in Syracuse for their weekly Dead Night. We learned of this Monday night ritual when we went to see our dear friends of Fireside Collective perform at this venue a few months ago. It’s a really tiny, dark, and dingy bar that is attached to a waffle eatery with just a big black curtain separating the two sides. You are welcome to grab some waffles and eat them in the bar area while you enjoy the live music. I haven’t tried the waffles yet, just the coffee, which was decent as far as coffee goes.
We saw The Jarvis Lauri Project, a trio who does instrumental covers of Grateful Dead tunes. We missed the first set because we were late leaving the house (it’s an hour long drive) so we were late for dinner which made us late for everything else after that. The second set was pretty damn great which made me disappointed that we missed the whole first set! But they perform at Funk n’ Waffles fairly regularly so hopefully we will get the opportunity to go see them again.
I can’t find very much information about this band except for the keyboardist Brian Lauri. They seem to be three laid back local middle age guys who love making music together and do it whenever they can. You could feel their joy through their music and it was beautiful to watch these three humble men living their best lives in a tiny bar in upstate New York.
That was our date night and this is what I wore for a date night with the Dead. My new Kantha Bae kimono that I have been dying to wear was my starter piece. I bought this beauty in Roanoke, Virginia, at La De Da Boutique where I got my amazing Kantha coat. I paired it with my new gray floral bell bottoms (I also have them in green) that I picked up at Indigo Sun in Asheville, North Carolina, on the same trip. I bought the green ones last year on my annual winter road trip and I was so happy that they still had them in gray this year!
I accessorized with feather earrings, floral cowgirl boots, and my favorite floral scarf. Then I layered on lots of bracelets and necklaces for a truly hippie look. All of my necklaces and my earrings were purchased from small businesses, by the way. The links are at the end of the post. A true hippie will always opt to shop small businesses over mass retailers. Or they will recycle, reuse, and repurpose old things.
Like I did with my old yellow canvas bag and Archie’s outgrown tie dye Grateful Dead tee shirt. The bag is all beat up and stained and the tee shirt was too worn to be handed down so I chopped off the graphics and hand stitched them onto my bag making two old things into one new thing! Similar to my Picasso bag.
I added a vintage JFK for President button because it cracks me up. And I recently bought two hippie patches to iron on the front pocket of the bag. The iron and the patches have been sitting on my dining room table for weeks in order to provoke me to get it done. I have not yet been sufficiently provoked enough, it seems.
I was so happy with how well the colors in my kimono coordinated with the floral embroidery on my bell bottoms and the floral print on my scarf. I got many compliments on my outfit that night, too. Our server at dinner told me I looked like a giant burst of summer and it made her happy. Then a lady at the show said she was digging my whole vibe which made me happy. So I guess it is a really happy outfit perfect for hippies on a Grateful Dead date night!
Check out this next series of photos. I was strutting through the woods all confident-like when my foot got caught in a tree branch that was lying on the ground. Jeff was kind enough to capture the whole incident on camera. Isn’t he the best?!
Since I am sharing funny photos, I figured I’d leave you with this one. I wanted curls in my hair for date night so I put those bendy curlers in for a few hours and when I took them out I looked a little like King Louis XIV! Oh my goodness, I am laughing so hard right now. I hope you are, too!
And that’s all I’ve got for today. Have a wonderful weekend, y’all!

What a fun outfit for a great evening out, delighted you had such a brilliant time spending time together. I think Louis would have probably been wearing even more layer than you!

Thanks so much, Pamela! I think you are right that Louis would have been rocking some major layers! I would have been a worthy competitor at his layering and curl game though! Hahaha.

I actually love the curls lol. Sounds like a good date night! And you look splendid! The boots and kimono are amazing. I hope everything is okay in your space.

Aw, thanks so much, Nancy! I do love my hair curly but it is a huge pain in the arse to make it happen! Those curlers take forever putting in and taking out and they need hours to set properly. Everything is going okay here. I am just a little bit exhausted!

Dive bars are the best! And live music in a small venue – awesome! What an amazing date night. Your hippie groove is looking fabulous! I keep trying to convince myself to buy Kantha Bae, but we have no local shop and I am overwhelmed by all the choices online. Maybe I’ll get my sh*t together and get it done.

Thanks, Michelle! I do prefer a tiny little dive bar over a huge concert venue. When we saw Fireside Collective there, it was so cool because it was a small audience and we were the only people the band knew so it was sort of like we got our own personal concert! That is one benefit of small venues, for sure. As for Kantha Bae, I also get overwhelmed by the choices online. It was really nice to try on a bunch of different Kantha Bae things, too, so I know how they fit me. The one kimono that I loved on the hanger looked absolutely awful on me and it is the one I would have purchased shopping online. Keep checking their website for boutiques that carry Kantha Bae. Maybe there will be one near your next road trip destination so you can check out Kantha Bae in person. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

What a fun look and it sounds like an equally fun date night the two of you had. My husband also likes to capture my most awkward moments when taking photos.

Thanks so much, Rena! Husbands who can laugh with us as we fall on our faces are the best kind of partners to have, in my opinion! As long as they help us get up when they are finished laughing. Ha.

I think your curls looked fabulous. You just needed to run your fingers through them a couple of times and you’d look like a teenager!!!
What a great look and so wonderful to get away,

Thanks so much, Jodie! I did run my fingers through it but I had to take a photo of Louis hair first! Hahahaha. I ultimately ended up with it in my regular old side ponytail though because it is wildly unmanageable if I leave my hair loose. But at least I had a curly side pony tail!

Well, now! This is the absolute perfect outfit for a Grateful Dead concert! I love the kimono (of course, I do)! And, everything you’ve added just makes it even better! Shelbee, I think you just make this whole world a better place…such an open and loving spirit! I know you make mine shinier!
Thanks for the link up. I hope you’ll come on over for mine!

Oh my goodness, Marsha, you just made me cry a little. Thank you so very much for such a wonderful compliment. I kept saving this special kimono for a special occasion and finally last night I decided to wear it just as a robe over my lounge clothes because it makes me happy. And guess what? It made my loungey time even happier. Why do we save our favorite things for special occasions? I think lounging should be a special occasion, too! I am going to try to make my blogging rounds this weekend but life has been so crazy lately, I rarely find time to open my laptop after 7:00 a.m. I hope you have a fantastic weekend, my friend! Keep shining your beautiful light into the world!
