Christmas in July & Your Own Twist Link Up #22
Christmas in July! I chose the theme. Then I had no idea how the heck to create a suitable outfit. I searched Pinterest and all I could find were party decor ideas and baby outfits which left me having to rely on my own creativity…which seems to be dead. Dead creativity is a loss that is very difficult to mourn. Hopefully, it can be resurrected soon. I am just not sure how.
Your Own Twist is a monthly themed style link party hosted with my dear friend Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart. This collaboration allows us to showcase our own interpretations of a chosen style theme each month. We share the theme with you ahead of time in case you are interested in joining us. You can see the upcoming themes below if you would like to create your own post around the theme and share it with us in the link party at the end of the post. You are also welcome to link any fashion or style post even if you did not follow the theme. The theme for August is Festival Outfits! I know I have styled many a festival outfit here on the blog, but I can’t seem to get enough, so I will be doing it again in August.
But let’s get back to this month’s theme…Christmas in July. What the heck does that even mean and where did it originate? According to Southern Living, Christmas in July began at a girls’ summer camp in Brevard, North Carolina, in 1933.
Fannie Holt, otherwise known as Miss Fannie, was the co-founder of Keystone Camp, a summer camp exclusively for girls in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. She was known for her whimsy and creativity as she would dream up all sorts of unique activities and celebrations for the girls who attended her summer camp. The camp is still run today and is still highly acclaimed for supporting girls in their individuality and empowering them to be authentically and truly themselves.
Christmas in July continues to be a summer tradition at Keystone Camp these 87 years later. It is celebrated on July 24 and 25 every year and the celebration includes all sorts of festive holiday traditions from carolers, Christmas trees, Santa Claus, fake snow, and a camp wide gift exchange. The gift exchange encourages the girls to be crafty and creative in their gift ideas.
This one little camp in the North Carolina mountains triggered a world wide tradition of Christmas in July which has sort of become a cultural staple and a simple way to have a cheerful midsummer celebration. Retailers have also jumped on that celebration bandwagon and market Christmas in July sales because we all need an excuse to shop more!
So what does a person wear to celebrate Christmas in July, especially in the midst of a terrible heat wave? I know it’s kind of kitschy to pair red and green together and it has a tendency to look sort of like a holiday costume, but I felt bright and cheerful in this combination. Plus I honestly had no idea what the heck to wear for this theme with regard to hot weather apparel.
This light airy tulle skirt seemed appropriate for the weather. I decided to pair it with a simple cotton tee shirt (nothing better on a humid day) in kelly green. I spotted these adorable green shoes hiding on a shelf in my closet and when I realized they had red flowers on them, they were suddenly the perfect footwear for Christmas in July. Plus they remind me of the kind of shoes a woodland elf might wear. And it doesn’t get more Christmasy than elves, does it? I added a little red sequined clutch for some holiday sparkle as well.
So there you have it, folks. My Christmas in July outfit…all red and green like a summertime elf! Do go check out Monica’s holiday inspired outfit as well!
What would you wear for Christmas in July?

My favorite tropical inspired outfit from last month’s Your Own Twist Link Up was Kim of Fierce Fashion with her Tropical and Camo Print Mixing. I love the combination of floral and camo. It is so, so good!

Shelbee, Merry Christmas! LOL, what a fun outfit! Really like that fun tulle skirt, but oh those shoes…love ’em! I made a black tulle skirt for the holidays a couple of years ago, it makes a good formal or party look, I like to pair it with metallic ballerina flats.
Hugs,

Ruth-Anne, thanks so much! I love these shoes so much, too, but they are little snug in the toes so I don’t wear them often. I love a good tulle skirt for any occasion, but they are particularly great at the actual holidays! Merry Christmas in July to you as well!

I would be lost on how to dress for Christmas in July, but the challenge is part of the fun, right? It really is a cute outfit, and those shoes are especially adorable! I hope your creativity returns soon! Have you looked for it under the bed? 😜

Thanks, Michelle! Yeah, this was a challenging theme, but I did have fun with it! I wore this outfit all day when I shot the photos and it made me smile and feel cheerful. I needed a little bit of cheer, that’s for sure. And no, I haven’t checked under the bed for my creativity! Perhaps my muse crawled under there to take a long nap. Haha.

Oh my gosh, Shelbee!!!!!! I love Christmas in July!!! I am sooo glad you shared this over at SYS this past week ~ perfect for picking up a theme for this week. And others shared their July Christmas trees with summertime themes. It’s going to be great tomorrow! <3 And you are an "elf on summer vacation!" What else would elves be doing this time of year?? Santa's over with the Mrs. in the Hawaiian Islands (I know, I used to get cards from my orthodontist when we lived there and Santa rode a surf board and the reindeer had braces…) just now before the season heats up in the North Pole. ;)'
Anyway, your outfit is very cute and I am happy to share it at Share Your Style #266 tomorrow. Really fun! And it would be fun to join your merry band of ladies for next month's party. I'll be back in school working so if its a big group, it takes me a couple of nights to get around to visit, pin, etc. Otherwise, I write, photograph and prep nights and weekends. I did go to a Steam Punk tea about 6-7 years ago while we were still in California… I have THE PERFECT photos for that one. And the cute skirts and jean jacket… 😉
Keep me posted, would you?
Big hugs and now you know why I didn't share the boys and space,
Barb 🙂

Aw, Barb, you are so sweet! Thank you so much! This was so much fun to style and the bright Christmas colors had me cheery all the day long! I look forward to seeing all the fun Christmas in July posts on your link party! So for the Steampunk theme which will be in September (August is Festival Style), you don’t have to do anything special except share your own post and link it up with us. I believe we already have a cohost for that month but we may be able to have two if you wanted to join us as cohost. Let me know what you think!
