“Calyx” by Lucienne Day | Style Imitating Art
Are you ready to get to some creative styling inspired by art? Well, it is time to share the next work that we encourage you to use for outfit inspiration to get yourself out of any style rut you may be in.
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
This Week’s Presenter
Terri chose this week’s artwork, “Calyx” by Lucienne Day. Calyx was an innovative furniture textile design created by the British textile designer in 1951 for the Festival of Britain. Terri chose this textile print because Lucienne Day is one of her favorite designers of all time and this print was groundbreaking, generating a new contemporary style of pattern-making.
The original design was hand screen printed on linen in lemon yellow, orangey-red and black on an olive colored background. It consists of a large-scale abstract pattern composed of cup-shaped motifs that are connected by spindly lines, conjuring an aesthetic similar to the modern painters and sculptors of Day’s generation. The design was so popular that it was also created in multiple colorways.

You are welcome to use the original colorway as your inspiration or you may choose one of the colorways that came later. Here are the ones I could find along with a few examples of home furnishings that were created in this print design.
I uncharacteristically find this modern print very appealing. I am not usually drawn to this style but there really is something special about it. Maybe it’s the colors that I like most as all of the colorways are really pleasing and soothing to me. I am not sure which one I will choose for my outfit inspiration. I guess I need to have a gander around my closet room and see what jumps out at me. I currently have no ideas in mind but I am eager to see what you all create from this design!
If you want to be featured with your art inspired outfit in Terri’s review post on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, be sure to submit your photos to her at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, August 23, 2022.
Happy Styling!

That is such a fun print! The blue background is my favorite.

I am really drawn to the blue as well. That shade of blue was my mother’s favorite so it always grabs my attention in a really heartwarming way.

I really love this print, especially in the green. Terri suggested I look through my photos to see if I have anything to play along so I just might do that!

Like you, uncharacteristically, I find these modern prints appealing. Soothing is a good word. But the pops of color keep them from being boring. I’m eager to see if I come up with something. LOL!

Oh my gosh, Michelle, I was looking through my clothing options for this one and I have no prints at all that come even close to this modern abstract. My closet is filled with florals, stripes, plaid, and tie dye with a bit of paisley thrown in. I have one sweater that could work. But I am not even pulling that out as an option because it is a million degrees here again and I am not putting a heavy sweater on my body! I am not sure what I am going to do yet, but I am going to figure it out today!
