Am I Too Old for a Nose Ring?
I did a thing last week. I got my nose pierced. Well, not actually pierced, but reopened I guess. But let me share the story.
Back in 1992, when I was an 18 year senior in high school, my friend pierced my nose with a piercing gun. OMG. It was the most ridiculous thing ever. The gun got stuck in my nostril, my eyes were watering everywhere, and it hurt like hell. But I was proud as pie to have my first body piercing (other than my earlobes).
Until I went home with my new facial adornment. My parents freaked out on me and adamantly insisted that the ring be removed from my nose immediately. If I chose to keep the nose ring, I was instructed to find another residence where I could live because me and my nose ring were quite unwelcome. I really had no choice but to remove the nose piercing just a few hours after I did it.
Fast forward 12 years. At the age of 30, I decided I really did like that nose piercing from my teenage years so I went and had it pierced again but properly this time at a professional tattoo and piercing shop. When my mother spotted it during one of our weekly visits, she again insisted that I remove it. However, this time, my response was, “And if I don’t?” To which mom had no reply except to scowl at me and inform me how much she hated it. I sort of shrugged my shoulders and informed her of my age and independence and left her that day with my nose ring still in place.
And then I had kids and we moved to the arctic North Country where winters are filled with colds and allergies and runny noses. About 5 years ago, I removed my nose piercing during a particularly bad winter that had me sniffling and blowing my nose a million times a day. The darn thing kept getting caught on the tissues so I took it out and never put it back in again.
However, recently I have been missing my little nose stud and decided I wanted it back. But I was bit too afraid to try to jam a ring through a piercing that most likely closed over the past 5 years. So I made an appointment at Bare Knuckle Tattoo to get my nose pierced for the third time at the age of 46!
Except it didn’t need to be pierced because it never did close. However, I am glad I went to the piercer because it took a bit of maneuvering the corkscrew style ring to get it properly in place.
And there you have it. I feel a bit more like myself now that it’s back.
Do you have any piercings? Would you ever get one? Do you think 46 is too old for a nose ring?
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee

I love it! Always have, but my nose is quite big and didn’t want to put any more accent to it. But it looks great on you!

Thanks, Nancy! You are so silly. I have a really big nose, too, and was hesitant about drawing attention to it. But I do love having it pierced. And heck, it’s the only nose I get, so I guess I should just appreciate it!

I love your nose stud and think if you want to wear a nose ring, go for it! I got my nose pierced for the first time when I turned 50. Happy birthday to me! I wear a stud, because that’s my preference. But if I wanted to wear a nose ring ain’t nobody gonna stop me! 😜

Thanks so much, Michelle! I do have a bunch of different colored hoops that I can change out when I am feeling more adventurous. But the stud is perfect for daily wear! I love that you pierced your nose for your 50th birthday! How fun is that? You rock!

Nope, it looks great. Very nice. Actress Lisa Whelchel from the old show “Facts of Life” (Blair) got her nose pierced at 56. My daughter got hers pierced at 18. As long as you are happy, then it is all good.

Thanks, Patrick! I love seeing midlife embracing their personal style in fun ways like that! It makes me feel normal! I hope you are having a great weekend.

I say do whatever bring you joy! I think you look great. Not sure I would ever do this because of the pain. I’m such a baby! Glad you reclaimed part of yourself back with this one.

Thanks so much, Kathrine! Honestly, it only hurts for a split second when pierced and then some mild soreness at the site for a few days. But still I know it’s just not for everyone! I hope you have a fabulous week ahead, my friend.

At times I want a diamond stud for my nose but my nearly 40 year old daughter says I’m too old for such. She also doesn’t think it’s proper when I say the thought has crossed my mind for a tiny gold hoop for my eyebrow!! I say do what makes you happy 🙂

Dee, thanks so much for sharing this comment! I agree with you…we should do what makes us happy. You also are not too old for a nose or eyebrow ring! If you want one, get one. We only have limited time here, we might as well enjoy ourselves!

I like it! It is very dainty and graceful I feel! I only have my ears pierced. Yes, I would have gone to a professional to make sure it was still open or not, lol! And hopefully not too much of a runny nose this winter!

Thank you, Mireille! I do have some fun colorful hoops I can wear in it for special occasions. I actually did end up with a bad head cold last week but the ring didn’t annoy me too much!

There was a girl in high school with a nose stud. That was the first time I had ever seen that on anyone. It was hot. Now, it’s boring and bit silly.

DJ, thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts on the matter! I appreciate the feedback and hope you are having a wonderful week!
