Am I Too Old for a Nose Ring?

I did a thing last week. I got my nose pierced. Well, not actually pierced, but reopened I guess. But let me share the story.

Back in 1992, when I was an 18 year senior in high school, my friend pierced my nose with a piercing gun. OMG. It was the most ridiculous thing ever. The gun got stuck in my nostril, my eyes were watering everywhere, and it hurt like hell. But I was proud as pie to have my first body piercing (other than my earlobes).

Until I went home with my new facial adornment. My parents freaked out on me and adamantly insisted that the ring be removed from my nose immediately. If I chose to keep the nose ring, I was instructed to find another residence where I could live because me and my nose ring were quite unwelcome. I really had no choice but to remove the nose piercing just a few hours after I did it.

Fast forward 12 years. At the age of 30, I decided I really did like that nose piercing from my teenage years so I went and had it pierced again but properly this time at a professional tattoo and piercing shop. When my mother spotted it during one of our weekly visits, she again insisted that I remove it. However, this time, my response was, “And if I don’t?” To which mom had no reply except to scowl at me and inform me how much she hated it. I sort of shrugged my shoulders and informed her of my age and independence and left her that day with my nose ring still in place.

And then I had kids and we moved to the arctic North Country where winters are filled with colds and allergies and runny noses. About 5 years ago, I removed my nose piercing during a particularly bad winter that had me sniffling and blowing my nose a million times a day. The darn thing kept getting caught on the tissues so I took it out and never put it back in again.

However, recently I have been missing my little nose stud and decided I wanted it back. But I was bit too afraid to try to jam a ring through a piercing that most likely closed over the past 5 years. So I made an appointment at Bare Knuckle Tattoo to get my nose pierced for the third time at the age of 46!

Except it didn’t need to be pierced because it never did close. However, I am glad I went to the piercer because it took a bit of maneuvering the corkscrew style ring to get it properly in place.

And there you have it. I feel a bit more like myself now that it’s back.

Do you have any piercings? Would you ever get one? Do you think 46 is too old for a nose ring?

Keeping it on the edge,
