A New Style To Try for the New Year & Your Own Twist Link Up #16
Your Own Twist is a monthly series hosted by Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart and myself where we showcase our own interpretations of a chosen style theme. We share the theme with you ahead of time in case you are interested in joining us. You can see the upcoming themes below if you would like to create your own post around the theme and share it with us in the link party at the end of the post.
This month’s theme was to try a new style for the new year. While the trend I chose is not so new, it is one that I haven’t tried in, oh about, 25 years. Remember the slip dress over the tee shirt trend from the 90’s? Oh, that was so my jam. And as all trends do, they become not so trendy only to resurface again decades later as the coolest style to hit the streets.
And so here we are in 2020 and slip dresses have been making a huge comeback on the fashion scene in the last few years. You see them everywhere and I love it. Not only because it hearkens me back to the much more innocent and simpler days of my youth, but also because it really is just a really cool style. In my opinion.
So why haven’t I tried it before right now? Well, because 25 years and two children later, my body is not quite the same as it was in the 90’s when I was rocking out my slip dresses. Slip dresses tend to be crafted from lighter, flowier fabrics that cling, cling, cling to everything. All the bumps and lumps and curves of midlife become evidently apparent in a slinky slip dress and so even in this era of body positivity (I am all about loving myself), I still could not get comfortable in one of these pretty little things.
But it is a style that I have been wanting to try recently seeing all my fabulous blogger friends doing it (sometimes I do jump on the trend bandwagon). I have been wanting to recreate a youthful yet mature 90’s grunge look. But the challenge remained to find a slip dress that wasn’t too clingy in all the wrong places.
It just so happened that I had some Old Navy rewards, so I went shopping, keeping myself to the very strict budget of not going more than $10 over the $10 in rewards that I had to spend. They were expiring so I had to use them! I am proud to say that I spent less than $5 on this Blackwatch plaid slip dress and matching long sleeve green tee. It is cold here, y’all, so I had to add the long sleeve tee to make my slip dress winter appropriate.
Old Navy had this same dress in a black and red Buffalo plaid, but since I already added a shirt dress in that exact same plaid and Blackwatch plaid is my favorite tartan of all time, I went for the green and blue one. I splashed in some hints of leopard for the hell of it, bringing this 90’s style straight into the 20’s with some unexpected pattern mixing. Velvet booties and a moto jacket also help with a more modern version of this 90’s trend.
Be sure to go check out the details of Monica’s incredibly cool look! I feel like she is tapping into some serious 90’s vibes, too, and I want to copy her! And share your own looks below.
What new things are you trying out in 2020?

I love this dress and the way you have styled it!

Thanks so much, Lise! It is super comfortable, too. Kind of like wearing a nightgown.

a plaid slip dress,, guess who is heading to Old Navy. Great look and great update on a fun look i totally remember
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Linda! My Old Navy had this on clearance for around $10. It is more online. But it was also available in red and black Buffalo plaid and I think a mustard floral. I kind of want to go back and get the other ones now!

Jennifer
I think you pulled this look off seamlessly!

Thanks so much, Jennifer! I think I want to go back to Old Navy and get the Buffalo plaid dress like this one!

I hadn’t tried that style before, not now and not then. However, it’s because I had so very few clothes in high school and I didn’t have a clue on how to style what I did have. I remember when I landed my first job at Wal-Mart and bought my first outfit. Oh how I wish I had a picture of that now. Anyway, I think you pulled this off fabulously. You still got it mamma!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Chrissy! I think you could totally rock this style now even if you didn’t know how to then! I remember in high school, I had a flannel baby doll dress in this same black watch plaid. It had a Peter Pan collar and I would wear it with ripped tights (Yep, I was going for the distressed look long before it became a trend) and my knee high Doc Martens. It was my favorite outfit in high school and I wore it all the time! I wish I had a picture of that.

Thanks so much, Elise! I think the next time I wear it, I want to go with combat boots for a full on 90’s effect!

You know this is the one slip dress I have seen that I actually like. I think it is all in the material! I probably won’t try the trend anytime soon but it is really fun to see others try it.

Thanks, Mireille! I think it is the fabric that made this work for me. I love the silk and satin ones, but I think they may be a bit too clingy for my curves. Although I haven’t tried one on yet. If I saw one in a store, I would give it a try and see, but I won’t order one online without be able to try it on.

Amazing bargain! Such cool headwear too.

Thanks so much, Gail! I wasn’t sure about the colors in the leopard print on the beret so close to my face, but I do end up wearing this hat a lot.

I like your play with the rautes and plaid. Same shape, but different orientation. Great twist. The long jumper and long pendant necklace make you look so tall. Great styling. Thanks for hosting two parties every week.

Thanks so much, Nicole! I think I want to style this dress with combat boots next.

Ellibelle
Such a great look on you! I too used to love these dresses in the 90’s and I have to admit I kept my favorite (a gift from my hubby) but haven’t worn it since the 90’s. Not sure if it still fits me and I sort of quit wearing dresses. I may have to try it on!
Can’t wait to see what you both will wear for your Oscar worthy outfits, I bet you’ll both look fabulous! Such a fun series!

Ellie, thanks so much! I can’t believe that you have a slip dress from the 90’s! That totally qualifies as vintage, doesn’t it? That makes me feel a little old, but still so very cool. I have a really pretty gown that I grabbed at a thrift shop for next to nothing just because it was so cheap. I have no where to wear it, but I think it is what I will style for the Oscar post.

Absolutely obsessed with your “own twist”! It looks super fun. I cant believe you snagged that dress for $5. Such a great score. Im wearing black watch plaid on this next week’s blog post. The leopard added such a great pop of pattern and texture!

Thanks so much, Lacey! I was really happy with the outcome of this look. I have been wanting to style a slip dress for some time and I was having some trouble finding the right one. I have some more ideas for styling this dress, too. And for the great price, I kind of want to go get the Buffalo plaid one, too. I look forward to seeing your black watch plaid outfit!

Love it! I love that kind of plaid. For me that’s the original one.

Such a cute outfit, I just love that bag. I adore anything leopard print anyway, but the cute triangle shape is so unique and I love how it looks on your wrist xx

Mica
it’s a great slip dress on you and you wear it so well! 🙂 I like the green long sleeve top underneath! I layer a lot of tees over my dresses but I need to try some under them I think!
Hope that your week is going well and you have a fun weekend ahead of you 🙂
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you, Mica! I had forgotten about the layering underneath dresses for a long while and then I think another blogger (or probably a few bloggers) did it and reminded me of this layering trick where you don’t lose so much of the dress. I have been wearing lots of sleeveless dresses this way ever since.

This is such a gorgeous look! That dress was such a good ON find and what a steal too! The pattern mix is so fun and I just love those booties!

Thank you, Jill! I really need to go back to ON and get the red plaid one! And I am enjoying adding a little bit of leopard when I wear plaid lately. It is such an unexpected and fun combination. Although my husband hates it and says it doesn’t go together!

Blackwatch plaid is my favorite. And you’ve styled this slip dress beautifully! Your jacket and booties give this traditional plaid a lovely edginess. I think you’re rockin’ this outfit just fine!

Thanks so much, Michelle! I have loved Blackwatch for as long as I can remember. I have a Blackwatch umbrella with a wooden hook handle that I bought at a Bass outlet when I was 18 and it is still going strong 27 years later. Whenever I see this plaid anywhere, I think of that umbrella for some reason!

Black Watch is my favorite tartan too. Unfortunately, all I have left of my once considerable collection is one blanket scarf, and an out of fashion tunic that I keep because of the beauteous black watch. I am thinking of having that shirt altered into a kimono type topper.
You look great, Shelbee!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Susan! I love that idea of altering a tunic into a kimono. Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style did that a while back and the result was just lovely!

Lovely dress, I love your boots too. My Daughter has some like these in grey, I might have to borrow them as we are the same size 🙂 Thanks for sharing at Welcome To The Weekend Blog Hop.

I love the mix of tartan and leopard print! I find slip dresses tricky too due to their clingy nature but your looks fab! It’s so weird to think we’re in the 20s! Thanks for linking up!

Thanks so much, Emma! That is my same issue with slip dresses. But I think because this one isn’t a silky material, there was less cling. And where did the time and the decades go?!
