A Guide to Layering Antique Necklaces
There is nothing quite like fine antique jewellery and women all over the world love to be adorned by elegant pieces they collect throughout their lives. Necklace stacking or layering is one of the hottest trends in accessorizing right now and it is such a great way to showcase your personal collection of antique necklaces. Today I am sharing 6 tips to help you create unique and fashionable necklace stacks to show off your own personal style.
1. Start with Your Shortest Necklace
Stacking necklaces starts with choosing the foundation piece which should be the shortest necklace. If you are lacking in that department, you can find authentic antique jewellery pieces from antique dealers near you or online who carry impressive catalogues of exquisite antique necklaces. Pearls, especially from the Art Deco era, make for an ideal stack foundation. You can find many different styles at various antique dealers or estate sales.
2. Don’t Overdo It
Stacking necklaces isn’t a contest to see how many necklaces you can wear at the same time, rather it is an accessorizing technique meant to add interest to your outfit. Necklace stacks can also serve to cover areas of bare skin or to break up large swaths of fabric or colour. Most stylists would recommend incorporating 3 to 4 necklaces in a stack. For an aesthetically balanced look, the goal is to have your necklaces spaced with about 2 inches between each piece. Layer a small, medium, and large necklace to inject colour, depth, and balance into your look. And if you are feeling a little extra bohemian, add a fourth necklace, like a long slim chain or beaded tassels.
3. Mix Metals
Everything and anything goes in 2023 so feel free to be creative when mixing different metals. Combinations of rose, yellow, and white gold along with silver and platinum serve to add a touch of colour to your look. In combining metals, you can also incorporate necklaces from different eras such as fine Georgian, Edwardian, or Victorian jewellery. You can find a large selection of authentic pieces offered at market prices by searching leading online antique dealers.
4. Make the Middle Normal
Making the middle normal is a trick that fashion stylists use to boost the appeal of the overall look. If you stack 3 necklaces, making sure that the middle necklace is plain, you place the emphasis on the first and third necklaces, which creates greater interest than just one necklace as a focal point. Spend some time experimenting with your necklace collection in front of a mirror. If you are missing a plain foundation necklace for the center piece, you can find an extensive variety of choices through online antique dealers.
5. Go Art Deco
Geometric shapes and rich colours are ideal for creating a standout necklace stack. The best place to find authentic Art Deco necklaces is through this online vintage jewellery Sydney dealer or through an antique dealer in your area. Most dealers of antique jewelry have an extensive inventory which includes pieces that suit every style so take your time browsing for your perfect necklace. Many antique dealers can easily arrange private viewings upon request and also offer private courier services for delivering your jewellery purchase.
6. Formal Events
Formal events often call for a less is more strategy when stacking necklaces. In general, two necklaces is enough with formal attire. You can easily layer a shorter chain as your featured piece since it lies closest to your face with a longer pendant style necklace to add an extra point of focus. However, when dressing for formal events, it is always acceptable to go the traditional route and skip the stacking in favor of a single statement necklace.
When it comes to accessorizing your outfits and finding your own personal style, the main thing to remember is if you feel great wearing something, then you will look great wearing it, too. And the very best accessory anyone can wear is a bright, beautiful, happy smile.
Do you wear necklace stacks? Or do you prefer a more minimalist approach to your jewellery?

I agree, Jodie! Every now and then, I layer two dresses together and I always think I should do that more often because I have enough clothes to wear two dresses at once. And I definitely have enough necklaces to wear 5 or even 10 at a time if I choose!

Oh yes, definitely play around with different combinations in front of the mirror. I probably spend more time choosing my accessories than I do on putting together the rest of my outfits. Don’t be afraid to double wrap or knot long beaded necklaces to adapt their length to your needs in that moment. Happy styling, my friend!
