5 Fun Things for Foster Families to Do in Fife
Fife is a picturesque region in Scotland with rolling hills, sandy beaches, historic castles, and lots of family-friendly activities. If you are a foster family living in or visiting Fife, there are plenty of fun things to enjoy together. This article shares 5 ideas for families to enjoy time together in Fife.
1. Explore Culross
Culross is a charming historic village located on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. Wander through the narrow cobbled lanes and admire the colourful 17th and 18th century houses. Pop into the National Trust for Scotland’s Culross Palace and tour the restored rooms to get a peek into life in the 1600s. Let the children run around the town square and climb up the steep path to Culross Abbey for panoramic views. There are also cute cafes and tea rooms to stop for refreshments. It feels a bit like stepping back in time!
2. Hit the Beach
Fife has some lovely stretches of sandy beach perfect for families who foster with fcascotland.co.uk. Head to Pettycur Bay near Kinghorn for a beautiful sweeping beach overlooking the Firth of Forth. Kids will love splashing in the shallow waters and building sandcastles. Or try out Leven Beach with its golden sands and promenade. Stop for an ice cream and let the kids burn off energy. For stunning views, Elie Beach is also a great choice. Bring a picnic or try seaside favorites like fish and chips.
3. Explore a Castle
Fife is home to many impressive castles and estates. Take the family to visit stately Kellie Castle with its sprawling gardens and woodland trails that you can explore. The hidden gem of Balgonie Castle dates back over 600 years and has a fun maze for kids to get lost in. Or soak up some history at St Andrews Castle with its dramatic clifftop ruins overlooking the North Sea. Most castles have child-friendly events like re-enactments, family trails, and activity packs.
4. Go Fruit Picking
For a fun outdoor activity, visit one of the pick-your-own fruit farms in Fife during the summer and autumn seasons. Cairnie Fruit Farm near Cupar has tasty strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, and more that are ripe for picking. Let the kids run around the fields plucking fruit and sampling the produce. At Craigie’s Farm near St Andrews, you can pick juicy apples and pears when in season. Many farms have child-friendly facilities like playgrounds, too. Take home buckets of fresh fruit for the whole foster family to enjoy.
5. Picnic in Pittencrieff Park
This lush park in the heart of Dunfermline is a fantastic setting for a foster family picnic. With its flower gardens, woodland paths, play areas, and sweeping lawns, there is plenty of space to run around. Visit the historic Glen Pavilion house, walk up to Dunfermline Abbey overlook for views, or explore the woodland trail. Kids will have a blast at the huge playground. Pack a lunch and make an afternoon of it. The park often hosts fun free events like outdoor theatre as well.
With scenic nature, child-friendly castles, sandy beaches, and historic villages to explore, Fife offers many memorable activities for foster families. Getting outdoors, learning about history, and sharing new experiences together is what it’s all about. Enjoy creating special memories in this beautiful region of Scotland.

Although I love the UK, I’ve never been to Scotland. Friends did and they totally love it.

I bet it is beautiful there! But I don’t think I will ever travel by airplane again so I doubt I’ll ever get there.

Hmmm…I wonder if I’ll be going there. I really should look at the itinerary for my trip, but it’s still a ways off. I’m just trying to figure out the weather. One person told me it’s quite hot and humid there in August. But, google tells me it’s in the lower 60s which sounds perfect to me!
