13 Years on the Road to Forever & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #637
Monday, January 23, 2023, was our 13th wedding anniversary so Jeff surprised me by taking the day off from work so we could spend the day together while the kids were at school. We had discussed going out for an anniversary date night dinner over the weekend, but I don’t really like to leave my house when it’s all dark and cold outside. Winter is for hibernating, not for late nights out. Also I much prefer a day date when my energy is at its highest level.
Given the limited time span of a school day, we had to cram a whole bunch of things into our A-Day schedule which began with taking photographs of my anniversary day date outfit. Remember this pink duster that I had forgotten about? Well, I purchased this leopard slip dress at the same time and forgot about it as well. In fact, I might not recollect that shopping trip at all! Now I am wondering what other new things have been forgotten in my closet room.
After our snowy photoshoot, we headed to the YMCA so I could get my new membership stuff squared away and then we had a few other errands to run. Following errands, we went for lunch at the John Hoover Inn in Evans Mills, New York, upon my request. They have really amazing cheesesteaks but more importantly they cook the tater tots to absolute perfection. And darn it, I wanted perfect tater tots for my anniversary lunch!
Also, there is a fascinating legend surrounding the John Hoover Inn which was formerly known as the LeRay Hotel. According to local lore, presidential son John Van Buren lost his mistress in an 1841 card game to George Parish II of Ogdensburg, New York. His mistress was Elena America Vespucci, a descendant of Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who went on to live with Parish in Ogdensburg for the next 18 years. Letters written in her hand do provide evidence that Elena did love George Parish. However, when she was 56 years old and her beauty was gone by his standards, Parish told her to find an apartment in Paris and he would send her an annual stipend through an agent.
Apparently Ms. Vespucci was originally sent to America because she was involved in a scandalous liaison with Ferdinand Philippe, Duke of Orléans, son of Louis Philippe, King of the French. King Louis insisted that Ferdinand marry a certain princess and said of Ms. Vespucci that she “was rather an obstacle, and her absence became necessary.” According to her parents, Captain Amerigo Vincenzio and Leopolda Cappelli Vespucci, Elena had always been “indocile and unmanageable” and had been the “mistress of some dozen men” before she was sent to America. (Source)
Parish’s 1810 Ogdensburg home was occupied by members of the Parish family until 1860. It was purchased by Frederic Remington and is currently the site of the Frederic Remington Art Museum. It is believed that Ms. Vespucci’s spirit lives on inside the museum. Local legend also believes that her spirit haunts the John Hoover Inn in Evans Mills. I wish someone would help her poor soul pass to the other side instead of selling $5 tickets to a “haunted house” event.
Okay. Okay. Enough about the Vespuccis, the Parishes, and the twisted up royal order to exile this “obstacle” of a woman! I do have to say, however, that I am downright inspired by her gall and her mid-19th century sexual liberation.
Oh, I was telling you about our anniversary day date. With full bellies and a giant joint to help us digest, we headed home with two hours left for some reefer madness and intimate time before school dismissal. Those details will be kept private, however, mostly because that big joint down there kind of wiped my memory clear away!
So it wasn’t a spectacularly exciting anniversary celebration but we were happy to be able to spend the time together. Until Jeff’s retirement from the Army, we rarely ever saw each other in January so gratitude abounds when we can celebrate any holiday on the actual date of that holiday.
Cheers to 13 years on the road to forever. I wouldn’t want to travel it with anyone else. It’s a long freaking journey to forever so you better really like your travel partner! I am fortunate to have a really amazing one.
Wishing you all light, love, and laughter on your road to forever!

What an interesting story about women making history and rebelling against society’s standards! Happy anniversary to you and your hubby! Glad you got a day date in!

Thanks so much, Laura! We had such a lovely day and we are both intrigued by the Vespucci story so we love going to that place because of the history! But the food is really good, too. Just pub food, but really good pub food.

What a fun outfit!! It almost has a slight vintage look to it 😉 And happy anniversary!! I’m glad that you got to spend time together – that’s what really matters. Our 10 year is coming up in May. I can’t believe it’s already been that long!

Lizzie, thanks so much! Yes, we are definitely grateful just be able to spend our anniversary together. I remember our first anniversary…Jeff was in Georgia for training and I was pregnant and alone in Pennsylvania. So I took myself out for dinner and a movie on our wedding anniversary. It was kind of sad and pitiful but I enjoyed myself! Then it followed suit over the next 9 years until he retired that he was always away for training or deployed on our anniversary. So yeah, togetherness is really all we really hope for our special day. Wishing you a very happy anniversary as well! Ten years is a big one!

Lucy, thanks so much, my friend! Animal print really does carry some extra punch, doesn’t it? And aren’t these wooden animal necklaces so great especially with animal print?! I found them at a local second hand shop and I wear them all the time. I hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

That printed cardigan looks so cosy and I love the statement necklace! I wish I could find forgotten purchases in my wardrobe, haha! I do need to declutter as it’s a bit full at the moment but I always know where everything is as everythign has it’s place – after we built my dream wardrobe room I promised myself I wouldn’t let it get out of control. Well, not too much anyway, haha!
Thank you for th elink up, and happy anniversary 🙂
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Mica! I wish I would stop forgetting things that I purchased! Lol I definitely need to declutter more. Even though I recently cut my wardrobe in half, I still need to cut in half again three more times before I get it to a manageable state! I am aiming for more minimalism in my old age!

Happy 13th Anniversary to you and Jeff! I’m trying to remember if we even celebrated ours this year! Probably not! I love this outfit…I’m just amazed how you have these separate pieces that always have connecting colors or prints! You come up with the absolute most awesome outfits, and this one is no exception! I particularly love how the hat and your scarf (?) coordinate so well! And, the tales of your dining experience…wow! Ms. Vespucci was definitely ahead of her time…or, maybe, she was just more open about it!
Thanks for the link party!

Thanks so much, Marsha! This is about as celebratory as we get for our anniversary! Maybe for one of the big milestone anniversaries we will celebrate big. But mostly, we both like to keep things very low key.
I didn’t talk about how this outfit all came together. I had the dress layered over the black leggings and turtleneck and needed a sweater for warmth. I keep all of my sweaters in bins in my basement and they are sorted by color. So I went into the “Red Sweaters” bin looking for a red sweater because I love red with leopard. Then I spotted this fun waterfall cardigan and when I held it against my dress, I loved it! I haven’t worn this cardigan in years so I was really pleasantly surprised by how well the hat coordinated with it, too. I have left the whole outfit laying out because I think I am going to wear it again this week. I like to wear an outfit 2-3 times before I put the things in the laundry!
